We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Wallace & Victoria Kander and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Megan & Victoria, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
We came up with the idea for our business at the end of 2020, after spending some time re-evaluating what we wanted out of our careers as dog trainers. Both of us had owned our own training businesses, but we didn’t feel like we could really do things on our own terms. We wanted to scale our business and increase our reach, and knew that we would be better set up to do so in a physical location. Our goal was, and continues to be, to build community amongst dog loving people in our region and beyond.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Victoria and Megan met through a mutual love of training dogs, when Victoria started attending one of Megan’s K9 Nose Work classes. We connected through these shared activities, and our desire to revolutionize the dog training industry to be more equipped to help owners who were struggling with their dogs find activities to enjoy together. We both struggled at the start of our training careers, to balance work and life in such a way that we could bring in a livable income, without burning out of the industry altogether. We spent years taking on too many clients, spending too much time driving, and still feeling like we didn’t have enough to show for all of our work. By learning from industry leaders, and our own past mistakes, we have been able to build a business that is sustainable, and allows us to enjoy other aspects of our lives outside of our work. We have done this by focusing on our strengths, being very clear in our goals, and learning how to set up systems that work for us. This has allowed us to change the lives of countless dogs and humans since we opened our doors, and we are just getting started!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We absolutely love Loveland, and being a part of this community. We love having our business meetings at some of our favorite local restaurants, especially AKA Kitchen and Henry’s, so we would definitely visit those! We would visit some of our local breweries, such as Crow Hop and Loveland Aleworks, and we would have to make a stop at the Backyard Tap because it’s the best place to have a drink with your dogs. We would spend some time walking around the Benson Sculpture Park, as well as River’s Edge Natural Area. A little drive up the canyon would also be in order, to visit Viestenz-Smith Mountain Park, and hiking Round Mountain.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Jennifer Smith – Owner and Master Groomer at Dogs’ Own Grooming Salon & School – She helped us find our location, and continues to be a strong supporter of our business, and a valued mentor.
