Meet Melissa Wenn | Art Creator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa Wenn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melissa, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My friends kept bugging me to sell my art, and the more I created the more it sounded like a good idea. I had an etsy shop years before so I knew I could make it happen if I put the work in.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My father is an artist and I spent hours in his studio watching him paint, painting with him, talking about his process and when to put the brush down. I watched him struggle to sell his art even though he was very talented. I was unsure I wanted to go that path and tried to avoid an art career my whole life. During the lock downs I, like many, found the time to get my art supplies out and I couldn’t put them down. Friends and family loved what I was creating. I was gifting little original watercolors to everyone. Then I lost one of my best friends to cancer. She wouldn’t be the last friend or family member we would lose that year. Things got rocky but I got a great therapist to get me through it. After that things became a bit clearer. I knew I wanted to make art in any form I could. It was a passion that I had tried to lock up, but I was not able to contain it anymore. Now I’m putting all my energy and time into creating. It hasn’t been an easy road, but I finally feel like I’m on the right path.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We live in the west highlands and I love our little neighborhood. We would have to go to the highlands farmers market on Sunday, it’s our weekly ritual. I love to buy my groceries for the week there. A morning coffee and breakfast sandwich at cork and cafe on their delightful patio is my idea of a lovely morning. Spending the day at Highland Park or walking to the Ashland rec center for a workout or a swim would be a lovely day. Dinner down the road at spuntino for some handmade pasta is always a must. Meow wolf is always on our list for adventures as well as the botanical gardens. A walk to our local cookie and bread shop Victory love and cookies for some of her famous ginger cookies and a loaf of bread, definitely buy her cakes if she’s got some available. They are delicious. We aren’t big drinkers but I love the patio at Oasis brewing company. They have some non alcoholic options, but if I am drinking their seasonal beers are tasty. I especially like their rotating sour. If they ski then we have to book a ski resort and do some skiing. A trip to Boulder to Pearl street is on the list for sure. Street performers, good food, shopping, what more could you need.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband, Chad, is by far my biggest supporter. He is constantly encouraging me to create more art. He couldn’t wait to buy me my first Ipad and Procreate to see what I could do with it. My sister, Ashley, is my proof reader and never complains. I send her the rough draft of almost everything I make and she is always there to tell me the truth. I also want to give a shout out to a few folks on Instagram who are always messaging me praise. You know who you are. Thank you. It’s the little things.
