We had the good fortune of connecting with Meream Camara and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Meream, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
My favorite quote does not come from anybody famous or anything, but instead my brother. “Humility opens doors, arrogance could never reach.” – Idrissa Camara. When he first said it; I had just decided that I was going to pursue rap, but I was so self conscious. Being from Colorado, there are not many rappers or musicians to look up to, so this made me feel like I shouldn’t even try. It was in my mind that since rappers from the mountain state regions were not making their mark in the industry, it will be impossible for me. Someone would suggest great beginning steps to take, but I would immediately say no because I “knew” it would not work for x, y, z reasons or I had another plan that I “knew” would get me where I wanted to go faster. At this time, I didn’t realize, I had let arrogance and ego take over my mind and feelings. Fear of failure was causing me to put up my own mental blocks that weren’t going to benefit me. Once he told me, “humility opens doors, arrogance could never reach” it is like something clicked. Every time someone starts something new, its normal to be humiliated. Especially now, in a time where social media plays a huge role in discoverability, if you are not already humiliated someone is going to humiliate you. Or at least try. This is all apart of the process though, be humiliated at first then stop giving a f*ck. Be humiliated, then learn from that humiliation. Eventually, the things you learned, felt, or even experienced while you were humiliated might help you reach breakthroughs that will open the right doors.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a aspiring/up incoming rapper. I am most excited about all the songs I am about to make. I have always been very opinionated and outspoken, but most of the time my mouth gets me in trouble. Rapping is a great outlet, because genuinely I’m going to say whatever I want in raps. Anything I’m feeling and thinking can be put into a rap. Whether it be funny, political, sad, etc. I will find some clever way to communicate it in a rap. Professionally, I am still in the early beginning stages of my career. Right now, I am focusing on writing songs in order to put music out and building a strong fan base. Every Thursday on Instagram, I post a “rap reel”, these are verses/chorus from songs I am currently writing that I share with my followers. I want the world to know that even though I am young and new to the game, I got some sh*t to talk about. I have seen, been through, and experienced things that I want to share.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If someone was visiting CO and it was up to me to make an itinerary. For food I would recommend Q’s Quisine, TK’s Surf & Turf, Sushi Katsu, and for tacos any truck you see driving down Colfax. For fun: Elitchies, Skate City, Lookout Mountain, Third Bridge (if you want to be scared), Denver Botanical Gardens, or Downtown Denver.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to my mom! I feel like everybody says this, but I have the best mom in the world. My mom has always been an inspiration for me growing up because I never saw her quit. I have watched my mom deal with the loss of my father, my brothers being in and out of jail, poverty, and much more but still have yet to see her sweat. My mom is originally from Conakry, Guinea, a country in West Africa. She moved to America in 1999 and has been hustling ever since just to make sure my sister and I are able to take advantage of the opportunities America has to offer. All my life, my mom kept 2-3 jobs just to provide for my siblings and I. My mom has spent a large portion of her life being a single immigrant low-income parent in America, when in all reality she could be living in luxury back home. She sacrificed an easier life, so her kids could chase any dream they want. There is no guarantee that we become anything, but she took a chance because there is a chance. She is inspirational and I want to make her proud.
