We had the good fortune of connecting with Meredith Gill and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Meredith, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Starting Glassentrate happened kind of accidentally. My husband worked for a cannabis extraction company and they were hosting an event and asked if I was interested in creating a couple of pieces for the silent auction.
My background was in glass art and I thought it would be a fun challenge and I took the idea and ran with it. After some trial and error, I found that what I was making was a spot on replica to the concentrates being sold in Colorado so I made a few pieces for the event.
One piece sold at the auction and I got a handful of business cards from people in attendance who were excited about the work. Within the first couple of months I had tweaked and improved the concept, had my first several clients. Before the year was out I quit my full-time job to focus on building the business of creating retail displays for some of the biggest names in the cannabis industry!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have been passionate about art as long as I can remember and have always pursued creative outlets in all aspects of my life. I went to college for fine arts and spent my life working with esteemed artists, learning and constructing with all types of medium. Art is the only way for me.
There aren’t a lot of people doing what Glassentrate does, so my niche is in short supply and high demand. As the cannabis industry is expanding, I am lucky to be able to work with brands from around the world! Each market has it’s own unique rules and requirements which I adapt to and provide exactly what my clients needs are.
The most important aspect to my success is having laser focus on creating a defined brand built around retail displays for cannabis companies, rather than trying to diversify into consumer goods or other product lines. I’m not saying those concepts won’t be in Glassentrate’s future, but keeping it specific to retail displays in the first several year’s of the company has allowed me to build the brand I wanted and scale at a pace I’m comfortable with.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love living in Denver, as it offers so many of the things that bring me happiness – an abundance of live music and increasingly more and more solid food choices.
A trip to Colorado wouldn’t be complete without a visit to my favorite music venues – Mission Ballroom, Red Rocks Amphitheater, Mishawaka Amphitheater and my new favorite – Dillon Amphitheater.
My favorite stops for good eats starts the day at Rosenbergs Bagels, lunch at Cochino Tacos and dinner at Hop Alley.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Glassentrate wouldn’t be here without the help and support of my husband, Zach Engel. His 13 years in the cannabis industry is invaluable as I built my place in this very niche market of combining art with cannabis.
