We had the good fortune of connecting with Mikie Fisher and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mikie, why did you pursue a creative career?
What really drew me to the beauty industry was the fact that it is so artistic. I felt like hair is a canvas and a stylist is an artist. The painting color and creating highlights and lowlights, the way you can shape with cutting, it’s art. Hair is amazing and can really be brought to life with a little effort and styling. Ever since I can remember I’ve been obsessed with hair. I loved accessorizing and styling. I think hair is a direct reflection of who you want to be. And you can be as bold and loud or as soft and natural as possible or have a mix! It’s business meets pleasure for me, I get to help make people feel their very best and have a lot of fun doing it.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
This industry is full of so much talent and creative individuals, I think what has really worked for me and my success is the close relationship I’ve built with my clients. I stay professional and transparent but the love I put into my work is felt in my services. As well as being incredibly driven, I am always looking to expand my business through new clients and referrals. I’ll work 40+ hours while 8 months pregnant (and I have) so I can help get someone taken care of! I’ve also always stayed up to date with education and fine tuning what I want to specialize in. Like blonding services and extensions. I love staying open minded though and staying well rounded so I can help a client achieve whatever look or style they are going for. I started from the very bottom as an apprentice which is the hardest position to be in, in a salon setting. I moved on to giving $15 haircuts 3 years ago and climbed the level system. I met all my benchmarks and worked very hard to get to where I am now. But remembering where I started always humbles me. I think that’s why I always express gratitude because I think about how much I’ve grown and how lucky I am to have such loyal clients who saw my talent and stuck with me over the years.
I’ve spent so many days off working on extra trainings and taken what seems like my last few dollars to take a class that will really benefit my skill set.
So to answer the question the journey hasn’t been “easy” but it’s absolutely been worth it. I’m still learning so much about the business side of things and honestly I’m so excited to dive into that side of things. Speaking from experience I feel if you are truly passionate about what you do, you will never work a day in your life. And that is something I hope people will take away from my story. Life is too short so make the best of it!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Being a Fort Collins native, and loving the sunshine I would say majority of our time is going to be spent outdoors. Whether that’s hiking, boating, enjoying the breweries. There’s so much to do in this area you just have to know where to find it. Old town Fort Collins has a charm that is unforgettable, full of a variety of restaurants and bars, small businesses such as crystal and book stores, to one of a kind boutiques. There’s a lot to be seen or heard with live music or comedy to drag and fashion shows and small museums. I think I could find a couple days worth of activities just in old town and walking around. I would have to take my friend up the mountain and explore Horsetooth reservoir as it brings back childhood nostalgia for me. We would have to get on the water and enjoy the sunshine and take a spin on the boat. That being said I love the water so another place I would probably take a friend visiting is up the Poudre canyon to have lunch over the river at the Mishawaka. This is also a popular music venue. Those are great summer activities but if it’s winter we’re headed way up the mountain to steam boat to enjoy some snow and slopes and hot springs.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Gosh, I could thank a million people for where I am today. There have been many highs and lots of lows that pushed me to opening my own small business. With that said, my amazing and loyal clients are the reason I’ve been as successful as I am. So I am so greatful for them and the years of trust we have built. I think much of my inspiration growing up came from my Aunt who is still a successful hairstylist, she was a big advocate in pushing me to get my own studio. I also wouldn’t be where I am with out my family, but a big shout out to my sister Danielle. She helped me through school and really supported that part of my journey.
