We had the good fortune of connecting with Mitch Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mitch, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I’ve always been a fascinated by comedy and comedic acting and having my own TV show has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember. I wanted to get a job as a voice actor in cartoons as kid but that’s a real tough nut to crack in the pre-internet days unless you pack up and move to California. Doing stand-up didn’t really cross my mind until a friend I grew up with started going to open mics in college and dared me to come give it a try. The instant gratification of telling jokes and stories in front of a live audience had me hooked immediately. On the flip-side of that coin, the immediate humiliation of having a joke bomb in front of a crowd is a unique feeling in and of itself.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My act is largely personal. Most, if not all, of my stand-up is based off of experiences I’ve had and just need to talk about them so I can process the ridiculousness that seems to always gravitate toward me. I guess that’s true of all comedians but not everybody is going to have a similar bit to you if you only talk about things that are unique to yourself.

The biggest lesson that I’ve learned along the way is that you are your own worst enemy in the world or stand-up. It’s so easy to look at others who are achieving things you think you should have achieved by this point and twist that feeling into jealousy and self-destructive inward thought. You have to be greater than what you suffer. Would I love to be further along in stand-up and the entertainment industry than I am after 12 years? Absolutely! But sometimes you have to self-reflect and ask yourself if you really think you deserve the accomplishments you desire based on the work you’ve put in. If you cannot answer that question in the affirmative, it’s time to go back to the drawing board. Not everyone has that self-awareness. If you don’t take a step back to “Redesign, Rebuild, and Reclaim” once in a while, you’ll burn yourself out and may never get back on the path you initially set out on.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d definitely take them to Comedy Works in Denver or The Comedy Fort in Fort Collins if they wanted to see pristine stand-up in action. I’d bring them to Wide Right in Denver to have some delicious chicken wings, croon some karaoke, and witness the “Club House” energy that hasn’t been felt since El Charrito tragically closed its doors. If we are in Boulder, we’re definitely stopping at the Big Daddy’s Texas BBQ Food Truck for some Burnt Ends that are to die for!

If the timing lined up, I’d absolutely bring them to see Lucha Libre & Laughs!! A night of professional wrestling with stand-up peppered in throughout the show is one of those things that sounds weird on paper like dipping your french fries into a Frosty, but ends up being quite enjoyable! Especially if Nathan Lund and Sam Tallent are in the commentary booth for the night! Those guys must have been twins separated at birth because they are always on the same comedy wavelength and it makes for an amazing show. Plus… that ring announcer/part time commentator isn’t half bad either! *big cartoonish wink*

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
When it all comes down to it: my parents and sister have been the most supportive people a guy could ever ask for while pursuing this insane dream. They’ve seen me crush, they’ve seen me bomb, they’ve patiently listened to me lament about things or shows that have no bearing on their own lives, and they have never wavered in their support; which I am eternally grateful. I love them more than I can possibly explain and just want to make them proud.
