We had the good fortune of connecting with Mitchel Ring and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mitchel, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Around the time I had the idea for The Poets Podcast I had been dabbling in audio recording for several years, primarily to record my own guitar music, and realized suddenly that I had amassed everything I needed to record a podcast. It was something that had crossed my mind vaguely prior to that point, but then it became a concrete concept for me and I started thinking about what it could possibly be about. I wanted to record more, and so I needed something to record. At the time, I was regularly attending poetry open mics in the Denver poetry scene, and one morning as I woke up the idea came to me–record poets reading their work, and call it “The Poets”. So that morning I bought a domain website, and shortly after that I started inviting poets to come and be on the show. I’m forever grateful to those poets who gave me the honor early on of appearing on the show.

The Poets wasn’t something I ever wanted to monetize, as I was featuring others’ work on the show. However, the beast that was born from this idea was Coven Recording and Sound, my own audio recording and production company, responsible for producing The Poets. Recording and producing my own work is absolutely an enriching and fulfilling process, and to be able to provide that same service to others is something I find even more so. I want to help others see (or hear) what their work can become when presented in new and original ways.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Along the way producing The Poets, I founded Coven Recording and Sound, my own full service audio recording and production company. This is still a fairly new venture, but I’ve got big plans for Coven. Along with producing The Poets I’m hoping to find others who want to see their ideas for a podcast, song, audiobook, spoken word piece, or any other audio work come to life and help them make it happen. If you have ideas, want audio work done, or have any inquiries email covenrecording@gmail.com and I’d love to chat about them. That’s what I’m most excited about–to see what projects I can help bring into this world, and to work alongside other creators to make art, and more art, and more art, to never stop making art.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Favorite spots in Denver proper include Linger eatery and Nana’s Dim Sum and Dumplings in the Highlands. For views, the steps and fountain area behind the Museum of Nature and Science looking across City Park to the skyline is a great spot. St Mark’s café on 17th if you’re trying to get work done late, and if you need miles and miles to walk the Highline Canal Trail is one I like a lot. Really, I can’t say I know all the dark corners of this city, so I do say get out and explore it.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Every poet who has appeared on The Poets podcast has made it the show that it is. Without them, it would be nothing but dead air, and I am forever grateful for those who have given me the chance to feature their work. Denver is a city of poets, I’ve come to realize, and I’m blessed to be able to spend my time among them. Keep writing!

My girlfriend Emma for her endless support of my art and ventures. Big things soon to come from Lady Julianne (on Youtube and Instagram).

Also, soundgym.co taught me almost everything I know about audio. If you want to record audio, get into it!
