We had the good fortune of connecting with Mr. Mota and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mr. Mota, why did you pursue a creative career?
We have all been music fanatics since we can remember. Members Rosen and Brendan Lamb have been performing live music for years. Rosen has had success as a solo artist in recent years releasing popular singles and recently his debut album “William”. Willie Vogel has played a lot over his life, but only by himself. It wasn’t until Willie met Max and Ari Lerman who had moved to Boulder in 2019 after calling it quits on their competitive hockey careers where they started jamming and finding their love for playing music. The Mr. Mota five-piece came about from a last-minute CU Boulder graduation party in May of 2021. They had no time to practice so resorted to playing popular covers and jamming. From there, the support was incredible and the band decided this was something they all want to seriously pursue together. Mr. Mota has always been rooted in the live performance aspect of music before anything else. The ability to impact the energy of a crowd along with improvising the music is a special feeling that can’t be replicated.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
We have barely scratched the surface of our art. With only one single out online, it’s hard to show people all of our styles and influences. Luckily, we spent a lot of time in multiple local studios and we have a plethora of music coming out in the near future ranging from indie, reggae, country/folk, and funk hits. Those that have seen us live know that we’re all about having fun while performing.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We love live music spots around town. Rosen also loves good wings. Our favorite spots that have incredible music and wings include Southern Sun Pub & Brewery in Boulder and Appaloosa Grill in Denver that we’ve had the privilege to play gigs at multiple times. For those who don’t know, our name Mr. Mota comes from the Spanish slang word for cannabis, “mota”. Whether you’re a regular toker or an occasional user, we have some great dispensaries to check out. In Boulder, our go to spots are Eclipse and Terrapin Station. In Denver, we love LOVA and Pure.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Our parents: Our parents immediately saw how serious we were about this band. While having a child in an up and coming band can be stressful as there isn’t much security in any aspect, our parents recognized that the only way to succeed in this industry is hard work and faith. They have flown across the country for multiple shows and always cheer as loud as they can. They continue to give us heartfelt support and we would not be where we are without them.
Our fans: Our fans mean everything to us. Live music is such an intensely intimate experience and there’s no better feeling than finishing a show and connecting with new and old faces that were dancing and smiling the whole time. We’re finding that there is no way to judge who may like our music until we’re playing and connecting with the crowd.
