We had the good fortune of connecting with Murat Tercan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Murat, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My Favorite quote ‘ Whatever you do with your hand, do it with your heart.”
Hi everyone this is Murat Tercan. I moved to US in 2002. I was 22 when I came to the United States, 20 years ago. I didn’t speak English, only a couple words. I was working with International Beauty Organizations as a Platform Artist for hair coloring techniques, hair cutting techniques, high fashion hair up-do’s, fashion shows, and worked as educator for human hair extensions, and color and designer haircuts; that’s how I came to United States.
I was not planning to stay in the U.S. I decided to stay because I wanted to see what the American Dream was all about. Imagine you are in a foreign country, you don’t know anyone or the language. I said “If I will stay”.
I need to learn the language and build relationships, get to know people and network.
I always wanted to have my own business. I have travelled all over Europe. I got my masters degree and learned how to do hair from the best masters of hair. I have attended a lot of shows and classes to be the best at what I do.
Our job in the industry is very labor intensive, very tiring, and hard on your body and mind because you are always standing on your feet all day, nonstop, The tempo is high. Formulating, designing hair, haircuts, colors, and hair up-do’s, are some of the things I do. Also, scheduling events, hair shows, competitions, and managing people. I said, “What else can I do to have passive income, so that I may do more with extra income?” I wanted to be more flexible to make different choices so I got into investing in real estate and renovating, then using the homes as long and short term rental properties, Without the risk you can’t grow.
I love what I do everyday. Doing hair and being creative is my passion. When you love what you do, can you imagine you work 10 hours a day doing hair? Starting from zero it was a lot of hard work. Days and nights.
I remember I was painting the walls and installing floor tiles (I had never done it before) in the 700 square feet in my first salon. I didn’t have the money to have some one install them so I learned how to do it for myself. Some weeks I worked 7 days a week to make my dream come true and now 20 years later I am looking into the past. All the right things and all of the mistakes I made have made me grow and encouraged me to do more. Today, I own a 4000 square foot building and have multiple businesses and rental properties all over the United States.
Behind my success is dedication, and consistency. I said, “I will sink or I will rise.” I keep trying consistently to improve my options. All the hard work, long searches, business classes, and connecting people who have experience, I was so lucky that all they want is to help me. All you have to do is ask and if you know everything….you know nothing. The, “I know! I know!”, attitude never wins. I feel you have to surround yourself with motivated people, go getters and inspirational people who believe in you.
Our brand is built on trust. Building long term relationships and trust makes everything so much easier so you can keep growing all together. I worked a lot at the beginning to find out what I really want. I love what I do and now I also want to have family time and successful business. Balance in life is so important. Work and play need to have equal time.
What should our readers know about your business?
I own Enchante A European Salon and Spa. We are all about customer service. All our clients feel valued. High quality products and consistent services. I have a Real Estate and Management Companies in the rental market. When you love what you do, you don’t work a day in your life. How I came to where I am today? A lot of hard work, dedication, quality work, active listening and doing. Nothing is easy, if it was easy, anybody could do it. You have to think outside of the box.
The goal is to grow everyday, learn new things, new skills; it will make you come closer to your dreams. My dreams came through because, first I dreamed, I planned it and I took action. Not just talking about it but just doing it is rewarding. Not giving up on the first fail. Learn from it, do it better.
If you are not trying, you are not learning. If you are not learning you are not growing. If you are not growing you become boring and just keep doing the same thing everyday.
You have to be excited. When you have good energy people want to be around you; they listen you, they value your friendship, and your relationships with people become long term and strong.
For example: when you yawn when somebody is next to you, what do they do? Yawn.. Your energy is contagious.
My brands stand for trust and to value anyone coming to my door. Hope keeps me going. Passion keeps me going. Positive thinking in any hard situation keeps me going.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We love going to Europe and Turkey. We go usually at least for a week each places to see, experience foods and attractions. If I was taking my friends I will start from France Paris, starting the day early in fresh bakeries and breakfast. In the afternoon going to venture to the Louvre Museum. Then be sure to take in the Eiffel Tower to see this masterpiece. Enjoy a day at the most elegant Palace of Versailles in this week, then cozy chalets dotted around within the French Alps, fishing villages seafood crêpes, beautiful hiking and biking areas. Going places like Mont Saint-Michelle: Abbaye du Mont Saint-Michel, Paris: Musee d’Orsay, Nîmes: Arenes de Nîmes these places some of them. Night life is great in Monaco. A lot of places with good food and drinks.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
