Meet Nancy Savage | International Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Nancy Savage and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nancy, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
In the intricate dance between a photographer and their subjects, outsiders may be unaware of the profound significance that unfolds behind the lens. The realization dawned early on in my journey that the true essence of travel photography lies in meaningful connections with people. As the years have woven their tapestry, the art of capturing moments has evolved into a deeper exploration of lives lived. I’ve dedicated time to understand not just individuals but the intricate fabric of their families and daily rituals. The experiences etched into my memory are irreplaceable, a testament to the rarity of being embraced by isolated communities and sharing in their everyday routines. A unique privilege arises when documenting the lives of indigenous people who not only welcome but trust me to unveil their uncommon traditions and lifestyles. Beyond the captivating portraiture, my heart resonates with the diverse stories and friendships cultivated along this photographic odyssey. Each click of the shutter is not just a frozen frame; it’s a chronicle of the unspoken bonds formed and the honor of witnessing lives less ordinary in corners of the world that many may never know.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart is not just the visual narratives captured but the relationships built. The pride I take is not just in the photographs but in the trust cultivated with the people I photograph. My brand is synonymous with an authentic, immersive experience — a testament to the vibrant mosaic of humanity I’ve been fortunate to explore. In sharing my story, I hope to convey that photography is not just about freezing moments in time but about becoming an integral part of the story itself. My lens is a bridge between worlds, a medium through which the world can glimpse the extraordinary beauty found in the lives of ordinary people.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Embarking on a week-long adventure in Colorado, I would start in the heart of Denver, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of Larimer Square and indulging in breakfast at a cozy café. A day trip to the awe-inspiring Rocky Mountain National Park, where hiking and picnicking set the tone for an unforgettable experience. The journey continues to Boulder, where Pearl Street Mall offers charming shops and acclaimed restaurants. A venture to the Flatirons would provide a taste of Colorado’s outdoor allure. In Colorado Springs one could enjoy the majestic Garden of the Gods, The Broadmoor Resort, and the historic district of Old Colorado City. Aspen would be next on the list, catering to adventure enthusiasts with skiing or hiking, followed by evenings in the town’s sophisticated ambiance. As a farewell perhaps a rooftop dinner downtown or at a local craft brewery would add a touch of Colorado’s renowned beer culture to an already diverse and enriching itinerary.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My journey into the realms of creativity and art has been a lifelong embrace that seamlessly transitioned from my initial career as the owner and designer of an Interior Design Firm spanning over two decades. Upon retiring from that chapter of my professional life, a yearning for creative expression led me unexpectedly into the captivating world of photography, spurred by a profound love for extensive global exploration. The genesis of my photographic career unfolded during a trip to Peru when, on a whim, I captured and submitted a photo of children in an elementary school to National Geographic Your Shot Daily Dozen. The revelation came six months later when I revisited the Your Shot site to submit another photo, only to discover that my Peruvian image had not only been selected but had earned a coveted spot among the Daily Dozen. This pivotal recognition, chosen from millions of submissions worldwide, ignited a spark within me to pursue photography as a career. This marked the genesis of a series of my photographs being selected by National Geographic Your Shot, a thrilling journey that has seen my work featured in magazines, showcased in national and international exhibitions, and displayed in esteemed galleries.
