We had the good fortune of connecting with Nathan Margosian and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nathan, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
Risk taking is a tricky thing as a small business owner. On one hand you have limited resources and the thought of losing them can be scary. But on other hand, if you never take any risks, you’re guaranteed not to grow and very likely to fail altogether. Like many things, it’s about finding a balance. You want to do a certain amount of planning in preparation of any major decision, but you also have to accept that you can’t account for everything and sometimes you just need to go for it. I generally have a high tolerance for risk. Largely because I believe that you can learn a tremendous amount from any new situation. Therefore, even if a risk doesn’t play out to my favor in the short-term, I know that the lessons I learn from it will be a huge benefit in the long run. With the right perspective, risk promises growth in one way or another.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I started NatMar Construction because I saw a gap in the metal building industry. You see, businesses in the industry almost always fall into one of three categories. Manufacturers who don’t sell direct to customers and don’t build the buildings that they that manufacture. Vendors who don’t manufacturer and don’t build the products that they sell. And erectors or builders who only put up the buildings that someone else has sold and a different party has manufactured. I started out as the third group. I built buildings that others supplied and more importantly, that others, with no building experience, designed. What I noticed, was that there are a large amount of people that were steered wrong in either the materials or the layout of their building. People weren’t getting the proper loads calculated for engineering, they were having columns in places they weren’t expecting, and they were getting sub-par materials and service. All because the vendor was trying to create the cheapest option instead of focusing on being the best option for that person’s needs. As well as that vendor not having the in-person experience of building metal buildings from start to finish over and over again. Many have never even been on a job site. When someone has never actually dealt with a product themselves, they have no way to really learn what works in practicality for the customer.

Now we design, supply, and build buildings for our customers. We use our in-field experience to advise our clients to the best design for their needs. Then we work with multiple manufacturers to shop for the best price and products to meet them. Finally we use our in-house project management and erectors to turn their vision into reality. Our mission is to be a one stop shop, that focuses on truly creating the best building and follow through, for the people that trust us to do so.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Grand Junction is a place for the outdoors. Look to the North and you book cliffs. Gaze to the East you have the Grand Mesa. Towards the West you have open plans of BLM Land stretching into Utah. Venture South and you have Monument. All are great and offer their fair share of sights and activities. My favorite, that is a no-brainer for everyone to see is the Monument. There’s no where else quite like it. Hike Independence trail to view it from down low, or stay above and enjoy one of the many look-out spots. Bonus points if you can catch a sunrise or sunset over the landscape.
For food, there’s a great Indian/Nepalese place in the Orchard Mesa area called Namaste Nepal. That’s been one of my wife and I’s favorites since we’ve moved to the area. For those looking to hide away. I’ve found that hiking up Kannah Creek is perfect for some tent camping and river fishing.
For a laid back day going to River bend park in Palisade has something for everyone. Take your kids to the playground, or bring your fishing gear and try and catch some trout at the lake. They also have a massive off-leash dog park that’s great for pets or just enjoying a stroll. There’s even a disc golf course and river access ramp for people looking for a more adventurous time on the Colorado River. Finish off that day with the best tequila of your life, at the dog friendly, Peach Street Distillery just a few minutes down the road and that’s a great Saturday.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The hard part of this question is keeping it short. There have been many people that have helped me succeed. Mentors in my industry, family support, and my original steel erector crew that trusted me enough to leave their jobs to work for me and my startup. All of those people get credit for the success of NatMar Construction, and many are still involved today. There is one person though, that’s been there more than anyone else. My wife Kayli, has in many ways, been key to the success and at times, the survival of the business. Her support has gone far beyond words of encouragement. She trusted me to bet our life savings to start the business. She trusted me to make it profitable during some of the earlier times, even when I would go weeks and sometimes months without bringing home a paycheck. She never wavered in her belief in me to create a business that would provide for our growing family. She also has been a masterful advisor, keeping me on track to the businesses goals of truly being the honest and best option for our customers needs, as well as providing a great and encouraging environment to work in. She called me out when I was wrong, encouraged me when I doubted, and never faltered in her belief of the vision. And she’s done it all while raising our son. I don’t know where or if, the business would be without her. But I know that as long as I have her, all we’ll do is make it even better.
