We had the good fortune of connecting with Nilou Farzam and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nilou, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Growing up with my mother’s artistic influence and skills, I naturally gravitated towards pursuing an artistic career from an early age. Her passion for painting and drawing sparked my own creative journey, shaping my perception of the world and igniting a deep love for artistic expression. Despite my father’s aspirations for me to pursue a career in science, which I did and succeeded in, I always felt a yearning for something more fulfilling. While science illuminated my path, it was art that truly warmed my heart. The desire to follow my passion for art eventually led me to embrace a career where I could merge both science and creativity, finding a balance that resonated deeply with my Soul.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I discovered my passion for art at a young age, influenced by my mother’s creativity and artistic skills. Despite societal expectations to pursue a medical career, my heart always belonged to art. At sixteen, I made the courageous decision to move to the United States, leaving behind the turmoil of my homeland in Iran. This pivotal experience deeply influenced my artwork, infusing it with profound emotional depth and a multicultural perspective. After earning an honors degree in microbiology and pre-med, I initially pursued a career in science. However, my love for art persisted, prompting me to transition into the art world guided by mentors who believed in my talent. Today, my art transcends boundaries, reflecting the essence of my diverse background and life experiences. Inspired by Thoreau’s words, I celebrate the beauty of nature in my work, using vibrant colors and intricate details to convey its wildness, freedom, and strength. Through my art, I aim to raise awareness about environmental destruction and inspire action to preserve the planet. With each brushstroke, I share my passion for nature, inviting viewers to connect with its beauty and resilience.
