We had the good fortune of connecting with Radeaux and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Radeaux, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I took art history courses in college that exposed me to a whole new world and I decided I wanted to do art as a career. I moved back to Pueblo in 1973. Pueblo had a brand new Arts Center and I had many friends in the art scene at the time. I started drawing and painting and showing my art.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art focuses on nature and the patterns in nature. My work is design oriented and the realistic fauna I paint is life-sized. I do watermedia on paper and acrylic on canvas. I observe the nature art of many different cultures and occasionally incorporate it in my work, I am a field ornithologist and I study nature on a daily basis. I have illustrated posters and books for many nature related organizations. It is my unique style that sets my art apart. My studio has always been in the back of an art gallery that I run. I’ve done that since 1974. In 1989 I had the opportunity to buy a two story building in Pueblo’s historic district that is perfect for a gallery with a sky lit studio space. Other investors were involved and my spouse and I have been able to buy them out over the years. Owning the property has allowed me to keep the gallery in business through lean and prosperous times. I sell my own art and represent many regional artists. I look for skill and distinct vision in the artists I represent..
I believe that talent is not as important to succeed in art as is perseverance.
I also collect art and encourage other artists to do the same. Buying art from local artists is the most grassroots way to support the arts.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Pueblo is worth checking out. The center of town from the Sangre de Cristo Art Center, the river walk, the historic district and the Library are all worth visiting . There are many fantastic restaurants, galleries and antique stores in the area and my gallery is right in the middle of it all. There are also many great museums in the area. For the outdoor person I recommend the river trail system and the Pueblo reservoir as great places to hike, bike, boat, fish and enjoy nature.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My spouse, Barbara (50 years) and daughters, Ann and Lu. My wife had a steady job and eventually started her own business. The family put up with the lean times and times of risk. Barbara is even more willing to take the risks needed to succeed in business. Both daughters have pursued art careers. Ann is an art professor and Lu is into interior design, art collecting and runs the gallery.
