We had the good fortune of connecting with Olivia Reed and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Olivia, the decisions we make often shape our story in profound ways. What was one of the most difficult decisions you’ve had to make?
The most difficult decision I’ve made for my wedding photography business was deciding to move across the country and start from scratch in a place where I only knew a few people.
I graduated college in December 2019, (in Maryland, where I’m from) with the goal of going full-time in my business in 2020…and then 2020 happened and nobody was booking weddings. Come 2021, things were picking back up, couples were booking weddings + shoots, and my 2020 couples were now having their postponed weddings. Fast forward to June 2021, I visited a friend out in Summit County for a couple of days and fell in love with the county and the lifestyle. I then came back out in August for a few weeks in between weddings and couldn’t get enough. By the time I had to go home for good that year, I’d decided that Colorado was where I wanted to be. I (very randomly and luckily) found a great living situation, did a quick walk-through, then flew home the next day and signed the lease a couple of weeks later.
I moved out to Colorado in January of 2022 and have since booked so many incredible clients that are more in line with my values and the direction I want my business to go. It’s been a truly wonderful experience, and honestly, even though it was a scary decision, it’s been the best decision I could’ve made for myself and my business.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve been shooting elopements and weddings for almost seven years now and I’ve been published in blogs and magazines (even once internationally which was pretty fun), but honestly, and it probably sounds cheesy, my favorite part of shooting elopements and weddings is the connection I get to make with my couples. Especially with elopements, oftentimes I’m the only person that knows the couple is tying the knot, and that alone is such an intimate and incredible experience. I’ve made so many life-long friends through this business.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d love to shout out all of my clients, past, present, and future who have believed in me and supported me through the years. So many of my clients have turned into friends, and it’s incredible to be able to have that happen. There aren’t many businesses where that can happen but I feel so lucky every time. It’s been six years of capturing love stories and I have loved every minute of it and cannot wait to see what the future holds!
