We had the good fortune of connecting with Othon Zapata and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Othon, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I think there are several factors behind success in any project or company; and in any of its conceptions, the core point is to be clear that not everyone perceives success in the same way! There are those who measure it with economic income, others with spiritual growth, others do it by inertia! But there are some points or “facilitating” factors of success. First of all is to set goals, concrete goals that have meaning for you. Search for ways to achieve them, surround yourself with the right people is important … and above all, do not stop before the stumbles, which in the end are only teachings and learning of the purest you can have. Be original and be irreverent.. In the end, success, from my point of view, starts where I decide… and it comes in waves, it is not a permanent state. That must never be forgotten!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
For Oveja Negra has been a path of 15 years of hard work totally independent; it began as everything, with a personal learning and with only one band trusting us to sell their shows… soon the need to seek and trace a path of our own was growing; a path that would unite through music, our compatriots who can not be in the Latinoamerican territory, with those who are there… always longing for the return, always listening to the Latin American pride beating in their chests. To have the opportunity to make these rock bands, for two hours a day for 30 days, become ambassadors of this beating pride is the greatest success!

Looking back and thinking in retrospect, the personal and professional success of our team, resides in these invisible bonds that we have generated through all these years of touring in North America.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, if you are visiting Mexico City you need no less than 10 days to get to know a flash of one of the greatest cities in the world! I would not fail to take you to Teotihuacan (Ancestral Aztec City), Xochimilco (Artificial canals for planting and tourism), Zocalo de la Ciudad, Cantina Don Pepe, Machetes de Amparo, Jamaica Market, Ciudad Universitaria, etc.. etc.. and of course to many concerts. Mexico is the Latin American city with more venues to listen to live music. !

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shoutout to all the bands that at some point in our short history have been part of the ranks of this agency, thanks to all the talents that have passed through our desks and to all the listeners that make music keep looking for more and more stages, even after the pandemic.
