We had the good fortune of connecting with Pat Weston and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Pat, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
To be honest I think about giving up all the time. That ironically keeps me motivated because my next thought is, “what else would you do?” I always draw a blank to that question. I’ve been a creative since I was a kid so I really can’t imagine doing anything else. Inspired by behind the scenes documentaries as well as the films and albums they were for, I couldn’t help but be drawn to it. So giving up doesn’t feel like an option.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The desire to make something new for myself sets me apart. While others obsess with finding what’s “in,” I’m interested in discovering what makes me tick. In working as a creative you’ll find that it is inherently competitive so the best thing you can do is be cooperative. Not everyone is going to succeed and personally I still have a long road ahead of me. However, being an artist means being a discoverer of yourself and the community you build around you. Some people will fall by the wayside and hurt you, sometimes you’ll be the one to hurt others, but in the end you need to keep yourself honest. Those who fake it and put on a face never tend to make it very long without losing themselves in the process. I tend to wear my heart on my sleeve. It has gotten me into trouble but I’d rather be unapologetically myself than fit someone else’s narrative of “normal.” Maybe I would have found greater success by now but I’d lose a part of myself in the process. Thankfully, this level of honest makes me kind of funny, the amount of people I’ve made laugh and feel good is worth it to keep going as a live streamer and entertainer.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, I just moved to New England from Los Angeles a few months ago but I have answers for both. In New England it’s all about the area around Fenway Park, the stadium the Boston Red Sox play. Not necessarily because of the Red Sox but because there are great spots to eat and awesome music venues around there. Boston is known for it’s music colleges like Berklee College of Music and Boston Conservatory of Music, you’ll find some great indie artists and great vibes down that way. Also the aquarium, I love aquariums. If you have the time, the Museum of Science is always fun, just don’t eat at their cafeteria.
In LA it’s all about the hole-in-the-wall places. Yeah, you can go to Universal and WB to do the tours and amusement parks but for me it’s all about walking down Ventura Blvd. in Sherman Oaks. You’ll find tons of little dives and communities all over LA, from NoHo to Canoga Park, down to Manhattan Beach, and over in Pasadena. As a music guy going down the Sunset Strip is always great because of venues like The Viper Room, State Social House, Whiskey A Go-Go and so many more. As someone who studied improv at The Second City Hollywood (RIP, another covid victim) going to comedy venues like The Improv, Groundlings, UCB, and of course, The Comedy Store are fantastic options. You never know who will pop in. My friend Brittany saw surprise guest Bill Burr at the Comedy Store and I regret not going with her. It’s not her fault but I’m mad at her anyway.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The first people in need of the shoutout are my parents. The older I get the more I understand how important it is to have parents that support your goals, regardless of failures and bumps in the road. I’m someone who is lucky enough to have some pretty incredibly friends as well. David Frankel was my partner going into creating an indie record label back from 2016-2020. As the story goes, covid closed the doors of that endeavor like so many others. David has helped me find my voice as a musician and as a creator. We no longer live in the same city but he’ll always be the Sam to my Frodo. (Because Sam is way cooler than Frodo and I’m kind of a dork.)
