We had the good fortune of connecting with Patrick Hanlon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Patrick, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
People with jobs think that having your own business means lots of free time. Nothing could be further from the truth—in the creative business. Your brain is continuously busy. I wake up sometime after 5am, make coffee, feed the dog and start writing. I try to stay away from email and social media until I have drained the first round of energy. I run errands and do (Zoom) calls in the afternoon. This is a 7-day process. I love it.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
If you are lucky, your creativity supports you. Which means that it becomes a kind of business. We have been lucky to work with global, billion dollar businesses with major things to solve. We have also helped entrepreneurs create success in their own enterprises. Success is the opportunity is to create your own story, rather than live inside someone else’s story. This is sometimes phrased as “be your own boss,” but it’s bigger than that. To help others build that for themselves makes me happy.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Colorado is all about being outdoors. And we love road trips. I’ve been driving I-25 between Cheyenne to Albuquerque for 1000 years. I once spent a night at Drop City (the hippie commune with geodesic domes) in Trinidad, CO. In addition to the usual favorites like Estes Park, I like day trips to Salida, Ute Valley in Colorado Springs, over Guanella Pass to Georgetown. The red rocks at Devil’s Backbone outside of Loveland. Even the long long day to Gunnison and back. We look for local diners and taco shops along the way and try to stay away from the chain restaurants. There used to be only Coors to drink now it seems every town has their local brew. (But I don’t drink if I’m driving.)

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I love Colorado but it’s 2023 and I am happily surrounded by a network of friends who keep in touch and seem to be all over the world. Especially since the pandemic, which sent everyone flying. I want to thank New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Paris, London and Rome for being the incredible cities they are. Truly inspiring for everyone who touches them. Did I mention Colorado? Let’s include Colorado—these red rocks have been a part of my life since I was 17.
