We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Maly and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachel, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Recently, I have changed my view of risk. If you were to ask me this question 6 months ago, I would’ve said that risk isn’t necessary and living in the comfort of the known is an ideal place to be. But, now I believe that risk is a part of every day life and encourages people to take the leap of faith they need in order to be fulfilled. I recently took a risk and decided to focus on finding a new career opportunity that allows me to be more creative. While it is scary to not know what’s coming next, it has generated motivation that I haven’t had in a long time. Motivation and excitement.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
While DishingOnDenver is not my full-time job, it is a passion of mine which can surprisingly generate a lot of pressure. While creating content seems easy from the outside looking in, it does take a certain set of skills and can also generate a lot of pressure. Pressure to make sure that my content is showcasing an event, bar, shop, etc. in the best possible light or pressure to try to get X number of views or likes. So, I would say it wasn’t easy to get to where I am today, especially in such a saturated market, but the difference between this and a full-time job is that content creation is fun. Having the element of fun makes it “easier” to overcome the challenges of comments, growing your account slowly, or challenging the platform algorithms.
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to continue to have that fun because at the end of the day, I’m just taking pictures and videos of food and posting them on the internet.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my friend was visiting Denver, I would divide all of our activities into the neighborhoods around Denver and Boulder. First we would spend some time in LoHi checking out all of the stereotypical tourist attractions like Avanti, Little Mans, and Meow Wolf. Then we would end the night with a cocktail at Lady Jane. The next morning we would grab an avocado toast flight from Green Collective, and embark on our next adventure.
If we were wanting to go out for the night, then we would do one night out in LoDo going to my favorite bars (don’t judge): El Tejano and Tap 14, then finishing the night at Ian’s or Sliceworks.
Checking out RiNo is a must, so we would start the next morning getting coffee at one of the many cute coffee shops, then go to lunch/dinner at Denver Central Market or Park Burger, happy hour at one of the breweries or Death & Co. depending on the vibe, and then end the night at Federales (you have to go there for the ice shots), Meadowlark, or Larimer Lounge.
Also, if we can squeeze in a Red Rocks show, a pop-up event at the Bnshee House, or a day trip to Boulder to check out Pearl Street, Boulder Creek, and Chautauqua, we will!
I have a full list of all my recommendations pinned on my TikTok and Instagram.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Outside of my parents and my sister, which I am lucky to say they are obvious supporters, I mainly contribute my success and motivation to my “OGs” aka Rayna, Tara, and Jackie. These girls are also Denver Foodies and Content Creators and have not only inspired me to take my content more seriously, but have also provided me with an outlet for brainstorming, hard conversations, and feedback. It’s so great to have a group of people in the content space that do nothing but support you. We have also started to brainstorm how we can expand our little group and work to make the Denver/Colorado content space more inclusive and welcoming. We know that as people with followings we have the great opportunity to not only showcase what Denver has to offer, but also make Denver approachable.
