We had the good fortune of connecting with Ramon & Alyssa McPherson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ramon & Alyssa, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Our thought process behind starting our own business was driven by a mix of passion, purpose, and opportunity. We saw a gap in the industry—independent artists weren’t getting the exposure they deserved, and mainstream platforms weren’t prioritizing them. We wanted to create something that not only gave talented independent Hip Hop and R&B artists a real voice but also provided a professional, high-quality platform where their music could thrive.

As it turns out, the timing couldn’t have been better. We launched Pretty Dope Xperience in 2019 once Rappy realized we could harness the power of a digital platform to connect artists and audiences in a real meaningful way. A year later when the pandemic hit, it confirmed that we were on the right path. With live shows shutting down and traditional avenues rapidly closing, artists needed an online space more than ever. Our platform took off during that time, and we’ve continued growing ever since.

Ultimately it was about no longer waiting for a seat at the table because we realized the gatekeepers of the industry would never allow it. Instead of trying to break into spaces that weren’t made for us, we decided to build our own. ‘If you can’t join ’em, rise above ’em.’ That’s the mindset we carried into this business. Every decision we’ve made with PDX Radio has been intentional, from curating the music to designing each of the platform’s features. For us, this business is about a lot more than just music—it’s about culture, community, and making a positive impact on as many lives as possible.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Pretty Dope Xperience is the direct result of two people bringing their strengths together to build something the music industry was missing.

At the forefront is Rappy Dooski aka DJ Rappy On The Beat, the driving force behind it all.

As a music producer, engineer, and independent artist himself, Rappy understands the struggles independent musicians face firsthand—trying to get their music heard without the backing of a major label, fighting for real opportunities in an industry controlled by gatekeepers…

Rappy’s journey to where he is today wasn’t easy.

He started as a self-taught producer, investing countless hours over 30+ years into learning his craft. The idea for PDX Radio came after he and Brandon Scott were planning to launch a podcast. They had inquired about joining another acquaintance’s platform, but ultimately, they were turned down. That rejection was enough to fuel Rappy’s motivation to find his own way to make it work. After some research, he realized he could build something so much bigger—a full-fledged online station where independent music could take center stage. Eventually, that vision turned into reality, but it took years of dedication, long nights, and sacrifices to get here.

That’s exactly why he created PDX Radio—so talented independent artists wouldn’t have to continue falling on deaf ears while navigating those outdated systems just to be seen and heard.

Behind the scenes, A100 aka Alyssa McPherson is the backbone of the business, making sure everything runs smoothly. She built the getpdxradio.com website from the ground up, curates content such as artist features like the “50 States of Dope” series, schedules programming, manages branding, and ensures that PDX Radio operates as a legitimate business. While Rappy focuses on the music, Alyssa handles the logistics, marketing, and structure that keep the platform growing.
Together this power couples ability to turn ideas into reality have been instrumental in transforming PDX Radio from a small passion project into a recognized platform endorsed by industry legends.

What sets us apart is that we don’t just talk about supporting independent artists—we actually do it. PDX Radio is more than just a music streaming platform; it’s an independent movement built from the ground up, designed to give independent artists the exposure, recognition, and resources they deserve, without forcing them to sign away their soul.

One of the biggest lessons along the way?
Ownership matters.
Instead of waiting for validation from industry gatekeepers, we’ve built our own platform, giving talented independent artists a space to shine. We’re all about independence, culture, and creating real opportunities. The world needs to know that independent artists don’t have to wait for permission to succeed. If you have the passion and the work ethic, whatever level you’re currently on, you can build something that lasts—and that’s exactly what PDX Radio is here for.

We want the world to know we’ve built a space where real talent gets real recognition, without industry gatekeeping or contracts that strip artists of their independence, copyrights, royalties or time.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We definitely wouldn’t be where we are today without the support, ideas, and contributions of some incredible people.

First and foremost, we want to give a huge shoutout to DJ BSlapN – Brandon Scott and Hip Hop Social Worker – Chris Scott for sparking the original idea for a podcast and giving it the moniker Pretty Dope Xperience to represent Portland. Their vision and moral support helped set PDX in motion.

We also want to recognize DJ FlyBy – Michael Walden for spreading the word about us all around town and helping us build our presence locally with dedication.

Dom.G – Dominique Glover played a major role online, bringing more eyes to what we were doing, helping to grow our following on social media.

And last but definitely not least, we want to honor our dear friend and PDX Radio’s original web tech, Khalid Al-Hassan, whose life was tragically taken in 2023. Khalid was instrumental in getting our website up and running, and much more. His contributions are forever appreciated and will never be forgotten.

It truly takes a community to build something so meaningful, and we’re grateful for everyone who has helped shape Pretty Dope Xperience along the way!
