We had the good fortune of connecting with Randy Mckinney and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Randy, what are you inspired by?
I’m inspired by light, by laughter, and by movement.

There’s something so magical about watching people come alive when they’re in motion, whether it’s on their bike with a goofy grin, or a community gathering and matching each others’ energy. I love seeing people push forward and create momentum, whether that’s on two wheels, through storytelling, or just showing up for others.

I’m inspired by connection. It reminds me how much good there is in the world when we slow down and take the time to ‘see’ each other.

I’m inspired by Colorado Springs—the quirky charm, the stunning open spaces, the way the mountains make everything feel both huge and intimate at the same time.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve always been drawn to stories. Whether through photography, filmmaking, or digital storytelling, my work has always been about capturing emotion and people. I love the little in-between moments and the realness that makes a story feel alive. My goal is always to make people feel seen and valued.

From my past as a full-time photographer to my current role in digital marketing, helping people and businesses tell their stories in a way that feels authentic and impactful has always been the goal. Helping lead The Wednesday Ride has been an extension of that—bringing people together, fostering belonging/inclusivity, and creating a space where movement and connection go together!

I started as a photographer, which led to filmmaking, which then led to digital marketing, community organizing, and launching a Substack where I write about leadership, storytelling, and biking (of course). There were plenty of times I felt like I should pick just one lane—but I’ve learned that embracing the journey and variety is a strength.

Creative work can come with doubt, burnout, and constant challenges. But every time I thought about giving up, there was always a person, a project, or a moment that reminded me why I’m here in the first place!

My biggest lessons:

– If you feel like something is missing in your community, maybe you’re the one meant to create it!
– The best things happen when we say yes before we feel ready.
– Movement—even gentle, simple, physical, or on a bike, is one of the most healing things.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If you visit Colorado Springs between spring and fall, the first thing I’d say is ‘COME RIDE BIKES WITH US!!’ The Wednesday Ride is one of the best ways to see downtown and the surrounding area with the best people. We meet at 6pm every Wednesday at the Lincoln Center, outside of Building Three Coffee, take a casual loop around town, and usually end up hanging out somewhere after. Don’t have a bike? PikeRide is our awesome local bike-share!

Overall, the best way to experience COS is to just get outside as much as possible. This city is full of trails and spaces that make you feel like you’re way out in the middle of nowhere, even when you’re five minutes from downtown. Ute Valley Park, Red Rock Canyon Open Space, or Palmer Park are some of the best places to watch a sunrise/sunset, take a hike, or just chill!

At night, my friends and I love going to Vultures or The Black Sheep—two small, unique, live music venues on Platte Ave.

For food, Mother Muff’s in Old Colorado City is a perfect anytime spot. And if you’re up for a little adventure, head out to Desert Reef Hot Springs in Florence, Co, one of my all time favorite hot springs, just 40 min outside of town!

Mostly, just say YES to whatever. Walk through downtown with no agenda, talk to strangers, find an art event, or hop on a bike and let the bike lanes or Pikes Peak Greenway decide where you’re going. This place has a way of surprising you if you let it!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There’s no way I’d be where I am without the people and communities that have shaped me!

First, The Wednesday Ride. What started as four people cruising around in May 2022 has grown into something way bigger than we ever imagined—nearly 70 riders in 2024! It’s more than just a bike ride; it’s a community of wildly creative, welcoming, and inclusive humans who show up for each other, on and off the bike. Being one of the leaders for this ride has taught me so much. Shoutout to Lauren Blanch and Cameron Zamot for bringing this idea to town, and trusting me, Mick and Alyssa to carry the torch.

I have to give a huge shoutout to my closest friends and the community that surrounds me—my people. They challenge me, push and grow me, and remind me to keep going when imposter syndrome creeps in. Thank you.
