We had the good fortune of connecting with Raychel Page and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Raychel, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Ever since I was little I have been taking every chance I get to create something beautiful and unique. Whether I went around the house and stole all the cardboard boxes I could find to make my own dollhouse or gathered all the glitter I could find to make a pair of fairy wings or painted rocks with my mom in the kitchen when I was 4. I have been in love with art for as long as I can remember so when it came time to figure out what college I wanted to apply to and what I wanted to study I knew I need to become a professional artist because it was something I loved that I could do for hours on end without getting tired of it. I chose to go to Brigham Young University in Idaho because of their amazing art program and I have grown so much as an artist because of it. I studied as a Fine Arts Major for 3 and a half years until realizing I want to help others find their love for the arts and have an impact on young artists, like my high school art teacher, Mrs. Charlesworth had on me. So I switched to art education, then after I graduate I will start studying for my masters so one day I can teach college level art. My freshman year of college I fell in love with the art of wood burning. Not long after that I opened up a little shop on Instagram and have been selling my art while I’ve continued finishing up my degree. I know I am where I am supposed to be and pursuing an artistic career is what I am supposed to be doing. I can’t wait to see where my art takes me in the future.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets my art apart from other arts is that I like to create pieces that people love to look at and see because it makes them feel happy and brings them joy. I think that there is enough heartache and pain in the world that I don’t need to express it in my business art. I want everyone to hang something beautifully unique in their homes or offices for others to see, and let them feel the joy that can come from displaying custom art that they love. Not many artists are like that now.
One thing I am most proud of is how I was able to find out who I am very early on through my art. My whole life I have known that I not only wanted to but needed to create art and that was the best way for me to express myself. It was not easy to get to where I’m now and I am still not where I want to be with my art or business but I am continually growing and finding new ways of creating things I never thought I would try, like ceramics or printmaking. I love trying new forms of art and seeing what I can create, but by finding new forms of art I have been able to incorporate them into my own art style. I love working with watercolors and markers as well and one day I thought it would be fun to see if I could use them in my wood burnings. I think it made my pieces even more vibrant and brought them to life. Other people started noticing and asking for more commissions than ever before. I think the best way to overcome challenges is to think creatively to solve the problem. If we are looking at a challenge the same way all the time you’ll be stuck looking at the same problem until you call it quits trying to figure it out. I have found that when I think outside of the normal and experiment with what I do and just have fun while loving what I do, I am able to overcome artist block and grow my business in new ways I had never thought of. I want the world to know that my brand is a product of dedication and determination, to continually better myself and my art. I am always creating unique pieces of art that people want to display in their homes. Everything I am creating now is just preparing and teaching me for something better to come later down the road and I can’t wait to see where it takes me.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Anytime I come home from college the first place I want to go is up to Rifle Falls State Park. I love taking all of my friends and family up there when they come into town. The beautiful triple waterfall is a relaxing escape from the stresses of everyday life. There are lots of hikes around the area that are fun to explore in the summer and winter time. My most favorite place to visit on long weekends when I am home is going to Vega Lake, in Collbran to camp for the week. My family and I love to go up there to go boating, four-wheeling, fishing, hiking, and exploring the area. Our family has made many memories and started lots of traditions at Vega. I love bringing my art up so I can paint lakeside and enjoy the warmth of the sun. It is breathtaking up there and I love spending as much time as I can there and I can’t wait to take my future family up there someday to start traditions of our own.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would not be where I am without my high school art teacher Mrs. Charlesworth. She has always inspired me and encouraged me with my art. All of my college art professors have inspired me to teach college art one day as well. Most importantly my family and my friends. They have helped me through every artist block, every frustrating mess up, and every random idea I come up with, that one thinks will actually work. I would never have made it this far in my art career without them by my side.
