We had the good fortune of connecting with Raye Wolfe and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Raye, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I came up with the idea for my business when I was struggling to find joy and purpose in my life. It was about a little over a year after I graduated college with a degree in digital art. I had just quit my job in the digital media industry and was seeking fulfillment in my life, I was reflecting on what made me the happiest growing up, and that was sculpture art. I’ve always been inspired by cartoons, anime, and video games, so I merged my inspirations with my passion. Thus, “The Tall Grass Studio” was born.

I started my small business in 2018 sculpting Pokémon pins and miniatures. Wild Pokémon can only be found in the tall grass, after all. My pieces are sculpted individually with polymer clay and glazed with ultraviolet resin. My specialty is sculpting wearable pins. I like to proudly display my pieces on my denim jacket so I can represent my own work in public.

My most recent accomplishment was vending at Rocky Mountain Convention in Denver, CO this year. It has been my goal since starting my business to have an artist booth at comic-con. I made a lot of wonderful connections and look forward to vending at more conventions in 2022!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started sculpting with polymer clay when I was about 8 years old. Sculpting has always been a good form of stress relief for me. After graduating college in 2017, I hadn’t touched ant clay in nearly 6 years. I found myself anxious to be in the “working man’s” world and thought it would be a nice form of stress relief to start sculpting again. What started as an exercise to manage my anxiety quickly became my passion all over again. A few pieces later, I had come to a conclusion: I was meant to sculpt and I want this to be what defines me.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
To anyone coming to visit Fort Collins, CO, I would take them on a scenic drive through the Poudre River Valley. Being in nature, listening to the sounds of local wildlife, and the gushing Poudre River is the best way to experience Colorful Colorado. After a meditative hike, I would bring my guests to downtown FOCO and introduce my friends to my favorite local band, Amorphic. The best way to start your day, after jamming and dancing to some local music the previous night, is with a fresh cup of organic coffee from my place of work, Beantrees Coffee Cafe.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to Sarah Blackwell for referring me to Shoutout Colorado, as well as all of my coworkers at Beantrees Coffee Cafe. I feel truly lucky to have the best coworkers in the world. They are so supportive of me and my artistic endeavors. I would also like to thank my sister, Jenni, for always being my number one patron, support, and art critic. Special mentions to my best friends from my hometown in Texas: Natalija Martinez and Gloria Ramirez. Thank you for caring for me and believing in my dreams!
