We had the good fortune of connecting with Rees Gibbons and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rees, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I always knew I was going to do something for myself. Since I was little, I have always been on the move, constantly moving from place to place and doing my own thing. I found film after I finished a stent in Europe finishing school for journalism. I fell in love with the fast pace adventure that came with a camera and kept doing it due to the freedom it allowed me to travel

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am most proud of how I’ve structured my business, as i consider myself a one-person studio. Most clients come to me for a concept to finish a project. This means i start from the idea stage of a campaign and im there for the whole process. Directing content and putting together the right talent to get any project done. This allows me to explore and have the freedom to have amazing clients all over the world.Communication and working online its opened up a tremendous amount of freedom to the traveling artist.

I got to where i was today with many mistakes and moments that i look back on and laugh at how unprofessional i was. That’s the only way to do it with any business as long as you learn and not be afraid to make those mistakes.
I still make mistakes, and every time they are stressful. But forget a memory card on a big shoot day, and you’ll never do it again. ha

It was super hard, and one of the biggest challenges I had to overcome was knowing my worth and not underselling my experience. In the beginning, I separated myself as the cheapest option even when I produced work that set me apart. It was a significant change and a challenge when I started to go to clients and tell them about price increases. I lost a lot of clients, but the ones that stayed are still growing with me to this day, and I have traded quantity for quality. Finding my worth translated to how well I’m treated as an artist. As people paid more for my skills, I was treated better and produced a better product as I’m more liberty to show my vision and expertise.

The best way to describe my business and story is that im a cinematographer & Marketer. Above all else, I’m a lover of life and a seeker of adventure. Raised wild in Colorado and classicly trained in Paris, I combine these two beginnings to create stunning content businesses. I specialize in adventure branding, bringing business stories to unique locations while creating a strong visual identity and strengthening client’s digital presence.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout has to go to my family. With a bit of tuff love and support, they pushed me through all the hard questions when it came to starting my business. I always had the art part down but taking control of your time and energy to grow something is hard. It’s late nights and sacrifices that a younger me wouldn’t have committed. They gave me the truth when it came down to getting to business even when i didn’t want to hear it, haha.

The other has to be the photographer Josef Koudelka. His work all over the world is a true inspiration when it to art. Truly sunning work.
