We had the good fortune of connecting with Rich Stoner and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rich, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Without a doubt, it’s relationships. Après-ski literally translates into “after skiing” but it is really about the social activities that take place at the time of day. The operative word here is social. I love meeting new people and connecting with them to learn their story. This is something that I have taken from après ski and applied to my own business which is about getting out there, earning it and sharing that experience with others post activity. I try to incorporate this mantra into how I grow All About Après in order to establish a community of like-minded people.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business, All About Après, was spawned from the good times shared with friends and family post ski day. Since the time of its inception, it has grown into a lifestyle. We are all about getting out there, working hard and then sharing those moments after with the people we love. When I started the brand there were very few après ski themed companies out there. Since then, it seems like everyone is trying to hop on board in their own unique way. For me, I’m a father of three girls. This give a whole new perspective to après ski as I strive to find places that they too can enjoy. Then I share them with others who are in a similar situation.
I’ve grown over the years thanks to an ability to forge great relationships. From my branding guy who is one of my best friends to my podcast co-host and then all the representatives in the industries I deal with, everyone has been so nice and willing to help me grow my brand. Nothing is ever easy. It takes time and patience. Patience has never been my virtue but when it comes to what I do, I have to remind myself that it is so enjoyable that it doesn’t ever feel like work. When you can turn passion into profit, you’ll never really work a day in your life.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m not exactly sure which city you want me to reference, but nonetheless, I pride myself on my ability to find amazing places to hang post ski day. That said, I’ll just give you the low down on the area surrounding my home mountain of Mount Snow, Vermont.
A typical apres ski day for me starts with a Bloody Mary at the Bullwheel which is the bar in the summit lodge. Chelsea (the bartender there) make a damn good Bloody complete with a bacon garnish. From there and after a few more runs, I’ll usually hit up a bar at the base called Canned. There, they serve up only canned beer from Vermont and the surrounding areas. You can usually find some pretty good and rare options to quench your thirst. Then, around 3, the legendary Bruce Jacques takes the stage at Cuzzins. His show is like a Vortex that sucks you in and you really won’t want to leave.
Moving away from the mountain, I am a huge fan of Snow Republic Brewery. The beers there are great and the food is off the charts. If you are looking for something a little more kid-friendly Last Chair is the place to be. It can get really crowded in the winter but since they have an arcade to complement the bar so you and your kids’ time will be occupied and the wait will be over before you know it.
If you are still raring to go after this, then late night is all about the Snow Barn. There is usually live music or a DJ that you can take in as you dance into the morning hours.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My wife Marcie. The idea for All About Après spawned from our conversations over long drives to our ski destinations in Vermont. Beyond that, her never-ending support has allowed me to travel to ski resorts around the country to gather and share content with others.
