We had the good fortune of connecting with Robyn Medina and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Robyn, why did you pursue a creative career?
Creating has been a passion of mine since childhood. I vividly remember one of my earliest projects: putting a piece of paper, a marble, and some paint into a Pringles can and shaking it all around. That hands-on, playful spirit has stayed with me ever since! As I took more art classes and participated in art shows, the encouragement I received inspired me to keep coming back for more. While I’m not a full-time artist right now, I love indulging in creative endeavors during my free time outside of my regular 9-5.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I like to think of my art style as charming, bright, and playful, while heavily pulling much of my inspiration from cute animals and baked goods! Primarily, I work with digital illustration and polymer clay sculpting, but I also find great joy in experimenting with a variety of techniques, including crochet, acrylic painting, and other more traditional drawing methods. In addition to creating the art itself, I love turning my designs into fun stickers and prints to bring my art to life in more bite-sized and affordable ways.
Although I currently pursue art as a side hobby rather than a full-time role, I’ve been putting lots of effort into honing my skills and discovering my style, especially over the past few years. Balancing a 9-5 job can be hard when it comes to dedicating time and energy to passions and hobbies, but I’ve learned to emphasize the importance of carving out time for creativity; it is something that truly matters to me, therefore I should nourish it as much as I can. I’m thrilled to see how my art style has evolved into a better reflection of myself, especially after years of searching for that perfect expression. It’s been a long journey to find my artistic style, and it feels incredibly rewarding to finally see my personality shine through in my work.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d definitely take them to some iconic spots, like Red Rocks and Union Station. I’d also love to show them Historic Downtown Littleton, which is filled with lots of little shops and delicious restaurants to explore! One of my favorite places there is Palenque, so we’d have to make a stop. I’d also introduce them to Sawa Sushi in Littleton and Willy’s Wings in Morrison for some tasty bites. To enjoy some fresh air, I’d take them on a stroll through the trails at South Platte Park.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a huge shoutout to my high school drawing teacher, Lorri Frisbee! She always encouraged me to push my creative boundaries, especially during a time when I was still discovering my art style. Not only did I learn essential drawing principles from her, but she also taught me how to confidently tap into my creativity with ease.
I’d also like to express my gratitude for my friends, family, and partner for their unwavering support. Their encouragement means the world to me and always inspires me to pursue my passions!
