We had the good fortune of connecting with Ross Ryan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ross, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’ve always been enamored with the arts and creating gives me a sense of purpose. I think that’s was people really need in life to feel fulfilled, whatever that purpose may be, music was definitely mine. Initially I was interested in being a fiction writer but a path in music took shape quickly and I began to pursue that direction more heavily after high school.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve been creating for as long as I can remember. Whether that be painting, drawing, creative writing but mostly I have immersed myself in the audio field. Song writing, production, sound design, basically anything audio related that is creative. I’ve pursued several musical projects over the years from rock and metal bands to becoming a full time electronic music producer and touring artist since 2014. Right now I work on 4 different musical projects (StayLoose, Dead On A Sunday, DRYVE and Lucy Daydream). Being able to sustain myself through passive income from years of releasing music has made me fortunate to be able to have so many creative outlets, in which I am eternally grateful. My mind is all over the place, so its hard for me to focus on just one specific outlet and sound. I would say early on that was a challenge for me, trying to cram all my ideas into one outlet. Once I opened up other projects and avenues it allowed me to really thrive. One of the biggest lessons I have learned is to trust your tastes and do what you find exciting. That resonates the most with others in the long run. Not to mention youre putting all your time and energy into your art, it better be something you enjoy since you are the one that has to live with it. Something you make might go unheard or unseen by anyone but if you loved the process and the journey, than you have already won.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Honestly growing up in Colorado I would absolutely just take them on a mountain excursion through the Rockies and the San Juans. I am a big mountains/outdoorsy kinda person. Even though I spend so much time in the studio. Which is why I think I am so into the outdoors. I would probably start by taking them up to my cabin in Red Feather Lakes. Its beautiful up there. Then I would head south to the Great Sand Dunes to drive and camp in Medano Pass. Then head over to Lake City to drive Engineer Pass down into Ouray and then Imogen Pass over into Telluride. Granted thats all if the weather is decent so like mid- summer. If its winter time here in Colorado I would take them on a ski resort tour (hopefully they ski!)
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate my shout out to all the collaborators and friends of mine that are pursuing a creative path everyday.
