We had the good fortune of connecting with Rubba from Delish Treat Box and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rubba, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
For years I had been in a funk. I couldn’t figure out what I wanted, what I liked, what I enjoyed. I dreaded being asked what my hobbies were because I sort of didn’t have any; this was not like me at all! I’m originally from Miami, FL and while living there I owned a women’s clothing line; I had fashion shows, did photoshoots, and had my clothes in couture boutiques. I moved to New York City in 2009 and basically froze creatively which is the opposite to what happens to people who want to expand their vision. In 2016, my husband and I moved to Colorado and I was able to recently find that making chocolate covered treats was something that I could do for myself, something that I felt passionate about, something that made me feel good outside of my 9-5 job and outside of being a mom, and it was something that I could share with others during their special occasions. I wasn’t thinking about profit, I was just thinking about making chocolate covered treats and making them look beautiful! I’m not a risk taker so it took me months to be comfortable with my decision to move Delish Treat Box forward as a small business. I tried to think of every possible scenario and every possible outcome but we all know that things don’t always work out as we anticipate. I basically knew that I had to be present in my business and take it one day at a time, one order at a time, one social media post at a time. At the end of the day, I knew that I needed to fuel my creative fire into something that brought me joy and gave me a sense of purpose which is how Delish Treat Box came about.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At Delish Treat Box, I make cakesicles and chocolate covered treats presented inside of a treat box. A cakesicle is like a cake pop but larger, holding more cake and intricately decorated. Cakesicles are a niche that takes time and lots of attention to detail to make it look great but I enjoy what I do so, to me, its worth the extra effort. I use premium chocolate and ingredients for all of my treats and price each box set accordingly. My designs are chic and on-trend and Delish Treat Box caters to clients who are looking for a unique and portioned way to present desserts.
I started Delish Treat Box in May 2021 and my journey has been a rollercoaster of emotions and of trial and error but it has also been a road towards constant improvement and creative ingenuity. There has been a lot of taste testing, changing ingredients, a lot of learning-as-you-go and modifying ways of doing things. Being a one-woman business also means that I’m in charge of not just making the treats but of marketing, social media, inventory, budgeting, etc. It can get overwhelming but I’ve found it important to find your reasons to stay motivated. I’m proud of the treats that I make because they’re tasty, they’re beautiful and it puts a smile on people’s faces. I’ve even seen people do a little shimmy dance when they take a bite out of my treats – and that is the best! Whenever I feel like I want to quit, I think back at where I was prior to May. I think back to how unfulfilled I felt and I refuse to work backwards in life. For years I’ve looked at the inspirational quotes in my office: “Make It Happen”, “Aspire to Inspire”, and my favorite: “Don’t be afraid to fail, be afraid not to try”, and I remember thinking about what I could do to feel like I’ve achieved what the quotes were trying to tell me and now I have finally done it. Its a great feeling and I’m continuously thinking of ways to develop Delish Treat Box so that it can only get better and grow.
I want people to know that I started Delish Treat Box for me and my personal desire to feel something new in my life but this journey has turned into a community supported effort that I share with clients and I think of you when I’m making your order. I’m thinking of my commitment to you, the client, and the impact that the treats will have on your special occasion. What I do is not just about dipping chocolate and making cake, its way more involved than that!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I come from big cities (i.e., Miami, New York City) where there is always something to do but I have learned to love the pace of Colorado Springs and I appreciate its growth and modernization while also keeping intact its mountainous, nature-filled areas. Sure there are lots of touristy things we could do: visit Garden of the Gods, drive up a mountain and hike, or stand in awe of the Manitou Incline but I like to go out to eat at contemporary places, so after we’ve worked up an appetite, I would want us to check out downtown for the eats! I’d take my best friend to Snooze for breakfast, Dos Santos for lunch, The Rabbit Hole or Four by Brother Luck for dinner, Chiba Bar for a late night donburi bowl and then to Brooklyn’s on Boulder Street to hit up a speakeasy.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a huge shoutout to my husband because for years he has constantly pushed for me to find something fulfilling for myself. Without him wanting this for me, I don’t know if I would’ve wanted it for myself. I would also like to acknowledge the many small businesses and organizations in Colorado Springs, CO who have supported me and opened their doors to share their space with Delish Treat Box. The community in Colorado Springs champions local small businesses and through their support I have been able to expand my network and share my work with so many people.
