We had the good fortune of connecting with ryohei kaneko and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi ryohei, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
It is an old poem, “人間到る処青山有り. It means, “There are places for people to bury their bones everywhere, so people should have great ambitions, leave their hometowns, and play an active role. In English, “Glory awaits you everywhere.” might be a close equivalent.
We do not believe this refers only to location. For example, I don’t think that you necessarily have to stay in the company, community, or place where you currently belong or live. If you find something else you want to do, or if there is something you cannot accomplish there, I think you should take on a new challenge right away.
This poem is the cornerstone of this idea. It may be a leap from the original meaning of the word, but it gives me an image that this world is really wide and the road is full of possibilities. That is why I like this word. I often remind myself of it when I am not feeling well.
【Work life balance: how has your balance changed over time? How do you think about the balance?】
In my mid-20s, while working as an office worker, I started learning about cameras, video, and editing after work and on weekends. So work was part of my daily life, and my daily life was also part of my work.
However, after I turned 30, I often asked myself, “What is it that I really want to do? I was doing everything that interested me, but honestly, I began to realize that I had both time and physical limitations.
So now I cherish the time I spend walking either early in the morning or late at night. It is almost always during this time that I organize my thoughts, structure my videos, and come up with new ideas. It is also essential time for me to take a walk while taking pictures without thinking about anything in particular.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
There are two main things: one is not to live a normal life like everyone else. The other is the idea that we should just give it a try. However, we have not been successful yet, so we are still searching.
I don’t have any outstanding talents, so I don’t think I could get anything more than ordinary by living an ordinary life every day, much less acquire any new knowledge or skills. My lifestyle was to get up earlier than usual, take pictures or study before going to work. Perhaps they wanted reassurance that they were doing better than others. It is never easy to make a living doing what you want to do, and I believe that you have to cut something to get what you want.
The other theme, “just try anyway,” is due to my disposition to think things through carefully. Therefore, I think it is important to act on things that interest me before thinking about them. For example, if you are interested in photography, buy a camera and try taking pictures anyway. Or, if you are interested in video editing, try taking video with your smartphone and editing it.
We live in an age of abundance of goods and services, so there is always an easy way for anyone to start doing what they want to do. Even if you actually try it and the result is “I am not interested in this,” you should not be able to answer that question without challenging yourself.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would like to introduce my hometown, Tottori Prefecture in Japan. It is one of the least attractive prefectures in Japan, but it is a place rich in nature, with both mountains and sea. I recommend Tottori Wagyu for beef, Daisen Tori for chicken, and seafood. As a plan, go to the mountains in the morning to relax and enjoy the view of trees and pastures, and then play tennis in the natural surroundings. Going fishing is also recommended. Unlike in the city, the population is small, so you can enjoy yourself wherever you want and whenever you want. Having a barbecue on the beach with the fish you catch is also great.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The father is mild-mannered and basically agrees and agrees with me. But he is the one who corrects you on what is really important. My mother is someone who challenges herself to do what she wants to do no matter how old she gets. I think I am the person I am today because of my parents.
