We had the good fortune of connecting with Sammy Anzer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sammy, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Being a comedian means taking risks every single night. A huge portion of what you write or say may never get said again, and learning to embrace that and take those risks is what makes the whole thing so much fun. I take big swings and miss big all in service of finding those moments that bring joy to people’s faces and laughter out of their mouth holes.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Comedy has been so good to me because more than several likes or lucrative $10 performances, comedy taught me to be myself. Every comedian wants to create laughter, but you have to wonder, “what kind of laughs am I getting?” and even people are laughing, but they’re laughing out of prejudice or laughing at you instead of with you–you come to internalize that the only laughs that really matter are the ones that you get by being yourself. By speaking the truth and saying things that you’re excited about or crack you up. That’s all that matters.

And those $10 performances with a drink ticket are lowkey fire.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For beer, I’m going to Odell to feel like family amongst some wood and dope art. For food, we’re getting a Pizza at Vero by star chef Andre Frizza. After that, we’ll chill on South Broadway, pop into Mutiny to get a quick comic book, record, or book. Then we’re going to hang out at some comedy shows at my favorite places where comedy magic happens: The Denver Comedy lounge, Comedy Works, or anywhere there’s a pop-up secret show.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I wanna shoutout everyone who believed in me before I knew how to believe in myself. That means my boys, la Familia, back in Queens, who pushed me onto stages. The open mic crowds of Memphis who watched me struggle through the very not cute years of my comedy at the PH cafe and everyone in Denver who’s seen me perform and been down to see me grow and do it again.
