We had the good fortune of connecting with Samuel Ronquillo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Samuel, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
One of the key factors behind my success is having range—the ability to experiment with different disciplines and modalities. Engaging in multiple fields brings unique perspectives to each one. For example, my experience as both a lawyer and an artist allows me to approach legal arguments with more creativity and structure my paintings with an analytical mindset. This cross-pollination of ideas leads to more innovative solutions and sharper problem-solving skills.

What I learned about lighting in my film course, for instance, not only enhances my oil paintings but also improves my approach to business marketing. Right now, as I prepare for my upcoming art exhibit, I’m leveraging this range to make a bold entrance into the art scene.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When I was seven years old, my family migrated from Mexico to the United States. I started elementary school without knowing a word of English. One day, the teacher asked us to write something, but since I couldn’t write in English, I drew a T-rex instead. She was so impressed that she had me stand in front of the class to show my drawing. In that moment, I knew—I was an artist.

But growing up in the hood, there wasn’t much space for creativity. Survival came first. I had to toughen up and push through life’s challenges. Through hard work and determination, I became a lawyer—something I’m incredibly proud of because it allows me to help immigrants from all over the world.

Still, my inner artist never left me. About two years ago, I took my first painting class, it only took 43 years. Today, I am finally becoming the artist I always dreamed of being. I’ve been in the studio putting in my ten thousand hours, preparing for my first art exhibition. That little seven-year-old boy who once drew dinosaurs is now creating art and living his best life. I am beyond proud of him. And soon, I’ll get to share his work with the world.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take my friends out on a hike on Fourth of July trail. Get food at Cup of Peace or Zeal in Boulder. Go dancing at Mockingbird in Denver. Checkout Meow Wolf. And lots of other hikes and spending time in nature.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a heartfelt shoutout to UMBRA, the Academy of Realist Art, and my incredible teacher, Elena Cantor. For as long as I can remember, I’ve considered myself an artist—but I always felt something was missing. Training with Elena helped me discover that missing piece, and now, I’m finally on my way to becoming the artist I’ve always dreamed of.
