We had the good fortune of connecting with Sandy Marvin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sandy, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
My life has been a creative journey. “Making stuff” brings me the greatest joy and always has.I like to cook, I used to sew a lot. I have been a medical illustrator, a calligrapher, an art teacher and a pastel painter, which is my current means of creation. As an introvert, creating visual art has been my means of expressing who I am, what I love and what I want to convey to others.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Over 50 years and several different art careers, I have acquired various skills and sensitivities, all of which contribute to the art I create today. Medical and botanical illustration fostered in me an appreciation of organic form, realistic portrayal, close observation and subtle beauties in nature. Calligraphy gave me a love of lyrical line and painting, a love of nuances of color and composition.
As is true of most rewarding endeavors, dedicated effort is required to achieve a degree of mastery. I have been fortunate to find teachers and mentors who challenged and encouraged me. Perseverance has enabled me to pursue increasing skill in my creative work. I feel that one must love the work in order to devote to it the necessary effort .
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Naturally, I would take a friend to visit Sync Gallery, of which I am a member, and other local galleries. Depending upon their interests, I would go to the Art Museum, tour the Capitol, Red Rocks, Denver Botanic Gardens.
I love Buntport theater and would try to attend one of their performances. Dazzle would be a dinner and music option. Dinner at Pino’s Place in Englewood and maybe Casa Bonita!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The artists of the Pastel Society of Colorado have been mentors, supporters and art buddies – a creative community that has been immensely inspiring.
