We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Gump and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
The Guest House By: Rumi
“This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide.”
This poem speaks to the fear within all of us. I find such freedom in greeting what ever presents itself, with gratitude and love. Knowing that even when things are hard and pain is in the forefront of our lives, that this moment; is exactly where we are supposed to be. We are feeling exactly what we are supposed to be feeling and we all have permission to experience those feelings without shame or judgment.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Originally I took up photography as a way to share my experience in nature and develop a deeper form of self expression.
The natural world has always been a part of who I am.
When I decided to create Gumpshawphotos, I did so with the thought of being able to share images of nature that I love so much with people that would appreciate them. I wanted to communicate what I was feeling when I was in the mountains, or among the aspen trees through visual media, and photography fit the bill. Photography allows me to slow down and tell a deeper story, one photograph at a time.
Gumpshawphotos brings emotion to the forefront of the viewer. I produce powerful images because I believe powerful images have the ability of creating connections that transcend culture, language and even time. Any time you can create meaningful connections instead of distance, you have the ability to make a positive impact on someone’s world. I think that’s valuable.
If I could pin down one lesson that has presented it’s self over and over again, it would be to listen to your intuition. It will guide you along your path and manifest its self in ways that you could have never imagined.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Since I live near Durango, Colorado I would definitely take them to the 11th Street Station for some awesome food! The Durango Arts Center is a must if you appreciate talented local artists (like Gumpshawphotos) “wink wink” lol. The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad in the fall is absolutely breathtaking and the museum is a must! I have pieces there as well! 🙂 Lets not forget the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory that’s only a hop skip and jump away from the Railroad! Then we could swing by the Durango Fish Hatchery to feed thousands of Rainbow Trout. Tubing the turquoise waters of the Animas River cannot be missed, as there isn’t anything quite like it! Not to mention the endless hiking opportunities in the area! There is definitely no room for boredom!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to thank Durango Art Center Gallery Director Jen Olguin for helping me get my art out there. She has always stood behind not only myself, but other artists as well. She tirelessly supports numerous artists through her role at the Durango Arts Center. Thank you Jen, you are the best!
