We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah (& Kris) Mashue and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sarah (& Kris), we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
VI love a calculated risk. Understanding the possible outcomes of a decision is the first step. Gathering the information about what “could happen” is key. Weigh what life would look like if the risk you are about to take on doesn’t pan out. Are you willing to take the chance? Can you survive it if it is a total loss? Also think if you are willing to live without knowing what you are capable of accomplishing?

I think most don’t appreciate there is risk in all we do. There is risk in not making changes, not taking on challenges. Working a 9-5 job has risk. You risk never knowing your full potential. You risk living a mundane, predictable life. Sometimes taking a leap to try something new, has less risk than just settling for the common.

Risk is often avoided because of the fear of failure. As if failure was something we should avoid at all costs. I want to live a life that can embrace failure, because it can be an excellent teacher if we allow it to be. Learning what we are not capable of, or what we should not be doing, is great information. It can point us to the path we are supposed to be on.

“It is hard to fail, but it is worse to have never tried to succeed.”-Theodore Roosevelt

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Together Kris and I were able to fulfill our dream of providing a place for rest and retreat when we built our cabins. It took decades of creative work to accomplish this goal. Working various humble jobs, becoming versed in several different skilled trades, honing in on our creative problem solving ability, and working with the resources available, was just part of what we had to do to get there.

We are thrilled to be able to design, build and manage our cabins to ensure guests will have a beautiful, unique, clean and peaceful place to be able to relax and soak in the views that are just outside the massive windows in the cabins.

We have learned that if it was easy, everyone would do it. But not all good things are easy. I would encourage anyone with a lofty dream to find out what the first step is and take that first step. Don’t become overwhelmed with step 10, 15, or 20… find the first step and move in a direction that takes you to where you want to go or to who you want to be.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We love visitors! We love the hiking, biking, skiing, soaking, floating and trail running in Pagosa Springs. Our favorite local hikes are Alberta Peak, Piedra River Trail, and Quartz Lake. Depending on the time of year, we would encourage playing in the river down town or skiing at Wolf creek. After a long day of activity we love to grab dinner at Riff Raff Brewing, Chavolos, Rosie’s or Kips. For a special occasion we love to be able to dine at either Alley House Grille or Meander. The eclectic atmosphere at The Neon Mallard is a great way to finish the day with a craft cocktail to unwind.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
