We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Morgan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sarah, how do you think about risk?
Owning a small business is all about taking risks! We opened our retail store on January 1, 2020 and little did we know, the world was about to change drastically. Deciding to open a small business is a huge risk, but you have to be willing to take those risks to achieve your goals. When everything shut down due to COVID less than 3 months after opening our small business, we had no idea what we were going to do. We had to get creative fast if we were going to survive as a new small business. We were in uncharted waters and had to take some major risks to ensure our business survived the pandemic. We pivoted from our model of being a brick and mortar retail store, to selling via social media offering free, non contact local delivery and shipping items to customers who saw us online. We had no idea what we were doing, but despite that, we pushed forward and took risks to keep our store afloat. It was a ton of work, but it paid off as we were able to ride out the pandemic and grow our small business. New Year’s Day we celebrate our 5th anniversary and none of that would be possible if we were not willing to take risks.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Sugar Mill Antiques and Vintage Depot is a brick and mortar store located in Northern Colorado. We are conveniently located right off I-25 and Hwy 66. I like to say, we are not your Grandma’s antique store as we’ve created something truly unique and different, that is by design. We are far from the average antique/vintage store and offer much more than just your typical store. We’ve worked hard to create a shopping destination, a curated collective of over 100 wonderful small business in one location. We offer a little of everything including antiques, vintage, home decor, artisan made, gifts and more. Our unique store was created for small businesses and local artisans. It provides a wonderful venue to feature their wares in a retail setting where they otherwise would not be able to do so. Sugar Mill provides customers and the local community a wonderful shopping experience filled with variety while supporting from so many local, small businesses. Did I mention, we have a putting green and replica English phone booth out front to check out when your done shopping!

Sugar Mill has become a staple in the local community through our Be The Change Program. Each month we feature a local non-profit organization making a difference in our community. We help raise awareness and funds for the organization through events and our change collection/donation match program. Some of our events include vintage car show benefiting local animal rescues, Witches Night Out for Breast Cancer Awareness, food drives and our annual holiday Giving Tree.

Being a small business, everyone in the family helps out! Our store is family owned and operated, a multi- generation effort! We have a heart for our customers and local community. We strive to provide a special place were friends can meet and memories are made. Whether that’s finding the perfect piece of furniture for your new home, or visiting our holiday train village display with your grandparents, memories are made daily around here!

We’ve had more than our share of challenges since opening our doors, but together our family has persevered and built a successful business. Owning a small business is not for the faint of heart, it takes some serious hustle! Our commitment to our customers, community and the small businesses that call Sugar Mill home remains the driving force behind everything we do! We are proud to be named a “Best of”, “Customer Favorite” and Neighborhood Fave for 5 years running. We were the recipient of the Denver Broncos Small Business Boost Award in 2022.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well we would have to start at Sugar Mill Antiques and Vintage Depot of course! We have numerous local restaurants and breweries (locally owned) that we would take them to. We are located just a short drive from Estes Park and the iconic Rocky Mountain National Park, so that is a must see!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people that have helped and encouraged us along the way! I would have to dedicate our shoutout to our amazing customers that support us, showing up and shopping local with us all year long!
