We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarahbeth Caplin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sarahbeth, why did you pursue a creative career?
I chose this type of career initially for its flexibility. I was taking care of my sick dad and planning a wedding, and needed a job with flexible hours. I stuck with it because of the freedom and independence it brings: being able to set my own hours, work anywhere in the world (but mostly at home), and continue using the gift of words for causes I believe in.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
When I tell people I’m a writer, they often imagine published books: typically novels. I’ve published fiction and nonfiction, but I’m proud of just how lucrative writing skills can be. You wouldn’t assume that there’s much creative potential when, say, writing content for the websites of plumbers or dentists. But in that scenario, you’re not usually writing for other plumbers or dentists: you’re writing for people who are searching out those services through Google. So what can you say to a layperson who doesn’t know much about those fields? That’s where the creative process comes in. The hardest part was getting started, but networking with other writers via social media helped me find my first contracts.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The Denver area is home to so many unique breweries. Even if you don’t drink, there are tons of farmer’s markets and coffee shops to check out. I also love seeking out independent bookstores.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mom is a successful freelance writer who showed me it was possible to have a successful career on my own terms. The type of writing we do is different, but we both work out of home offices (and often with cats in our laps). But before I started offering professional writing and editing services, I was inspired to start writing about my spiritual journey after reading Girl Meets God by Lauren Winner. As a Jewish convert to Christianity, there aren’t many books or blog posts that I could relate to. Reading her book helped me feel less alone, and I started blogging in the hope that I could have a similar impact on someone else.
