We had the good fortune of connecting with Scotty Sandow and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Scotty, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started Run Local Trails as a way to connect people to their local trail systems. I’ve always had a eye for design and communication – so creating t-shirts, hoodies, stickers and more seemed like a great vehicle to promote the RLT brand.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am the host of the UltraRunning Magazine podcast. I am extremely fortunate to be working along side some of the best in the business – from the magazine owners, to our incredible editor-in-chief, staff and cast of amazing writers. But it is the guests, from elite athletes and ordinary people achieving the extraordinary, who make the podcast possible. Their stories are compelling and real!

The road getting here was not conventional. I got my start working in radio when I was in college. I got a lucky break and was promoted up to executive producer for a morning talk show on television and radio.

I co-launched the UltraRunner Podcast, which had amazing success in a medium that was fairly new.

Creating that podcast from the ground up was a lot of hard work and determination, but most of all it was a lot of fun. It was the feedback from our listeners that truly keep me going and why I found myself back behind the microphone with UltraRunning Magazine.

I’ve learned to do what you love and love what you do in your life. I truly believe that everyone possesses the talent to achieve their goals – it just takes a lot of time, luck and opportunity.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
EATS: The Ginger Pig DRINKS: Wynkoop Brewing Co.
TRAIL: Mayflower Gulch Trail
HANG: The Happy Camper

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The trail running community is at the heart of Run Local Trails. The community truly looks out for one another, as our bond over the trail unites us. Often times, complete strangers depend on the kindness of others, especially during more vulnerable moments in a challenge or self-doubt. The trail can be intimidating for first-timers, luckily, there are vast amounts of people willing to share everything they know, including the shirt of their back if need be, but usually it’s half of a peanut butter sandwich.
