We had the good fortune of connecting with Senami Yededji and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Senami, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
My work life balance has definitely changed in extreme ways as my hair business takes up most of my time. If it’s not my actual services taking up my time, its: preparing the hair for the services, working on editing videos for my social media, working on my booking site, filming hours of content, editing lighting in pictures, shopping for work materials and coming up with new and creative marketing/content ideas. It’s not an exaggeration to say that my business is my whole life
What should our readers know about your business?
My independent business, StyledbySenami specializes in wig and extension services with the end goal of selling quality hair to quality people. My mission to create real and positive change in my community instead of focusing on capitalistic gain is what sets my business apart from others. I’m most excited and proud about my growth as a stylist. I went from being a mobile braider, not charging my worth and being extremely unhappy with the way I handled my business to having my own suite, charging accordingly for booth rent and materials, and providing services I actually enjoy doing. I got where I am through a combination of consistency and connections. Being consistent with doing hair even when I had no desire to do it highlighted to my audience that I was serious about my work and helped me create valuable experiences. Taking advice from the professionals around me gave me a better perspective of how to cultivate the right mindset and values. It was absolutely not easy and required a lot of patience and genuine interest on my part to edit hours of videos, scroll through social media for hours for content inspiration and so much more. I still haven’t overcome some challenges but my passion and drive is fully responsible for my resilience and ability to overcome challenges. I’ve learned that not every client is for me and I learned the importance of marketing your business towards a specific target audience. I’ve also learned not so provide services I actively hate because that leads to burn out. I want people to know that StyledbySenami is dedicated towards making every client feel comfortable, happy and fulfilled.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There’s a couple people that I’d say have a key part in my success today, in order of their entrance in my personal and professional life: The first would be my star of a best friend, Jeanae Ellis who was one of my very first clients and has supported me from my start when my work was (in my opinion) horrible and continues to support me to this day. As my first appointed “manager”, she used her undeniable charm and absurd charisma to market my work like she was paid to do it and is actually responsible for much of my first clientele. She was a walking ad for my business and she is and will always be one of the most important people in my support system. The second would be my amazingly breathtaking boyfriend Garrett Gordon who is an incredibly talented barber located at the W2Natural shop in Denver and is responsible for motivating me to seriously consider taking a career in cosmetology seriously. I was fully convinced that there was no real future doing hair full time but his talent, passion, and insane work ethic showed me it was not only possible, but that I was fully capable of making it happen. He demonstrates to me everyday what strength and drive look like and is someone who’s always believed in me just as I believe in him. He selflessly went out of his way to introduce me to the third person on this list and is a major part of my growth as a stylist. The third and last person would be Nasia Turner, one of the most talented OGs in the hair game that specializes in protective styles/locs and is also located in Denver. She offered me a deal where I’d use her personal suite on her off days for a lower price than I’d pay anywhere else in order to give me the confidence to grow my clientele and created a career defining change in my business. Recently, she was able to give me my own space which is one of my biggest dreams and is all I’ve ever wanted as a stylist. Nasia is truly a kind, positivity driven, understanding and supportive mentor and has given me an incredible boost in confidence and peace career wise.
