Hi Shelli, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
The commercial space industry, often overshadowed by images of astronauts and distant galaxies, plays a pivotal role in our daily lives. Its advancements have revolutionized communication, imaging, navigation, and manufacturing, shaping our modern world in ways we often overlook.

The ubiquitous satellites orbiting Earth form the backbone of our telecommunications networks, enabling seamless global connectivity through instant messaging, voice calls, and internet access. During the COVID-19 pandemic, these technologies enabled telework, telehealth, and teleschool, demonstrating their critical role in maintaining social connections and ensuring essential services during times of crisis.

Space technology has also transformed our ability to perceive and interact with the world around us. Satellites provide detailed images of Earth’s surface, powering weather forecasting, environmental monitoring, and resource management. The Global Positioning System (GPS), a network of satellites, has become indispensable for navigation in everything from cars and airplanes to smartphones and fitness trackers.

Beyond these well-known applications, space technology permeates a wide range of consumer products and industrial processes. Lightweight materials developed for spacecraft have led to advancements in sports equipment, medical devices, and construction materials. Fire-resistant clothing, originally designed for astronauts, now protects firefighters and other professionals working in hazardous environments. For instance, the Apollo-era fire-resistant clothing allowed my firefighter husband to return home safely for 30 years.

The commercial space industry is poised for continued growth, with emerging technologies that promise to further transform our lives. Satellite-based broadband internet and space-based solar power hold immense potential, while ventures like space tourism and resource mining beckon on the horizon. As we venture further into the cosmos, the benefits of space exploration will continue to permeate our everyday lives, shaping the future we envision.

My career journey has been a tapestry of diverse experiences, each chapter shaping my perspective and propelling me towards my current role as Chief Operating Officer at Space Foundation. The foundation of my professional story lies in my decision to enlist in the U.S. Air Force right out of high school. Financial limitations, an uncharted academic path, and a desire to travel the world all played a role in this decision.

The Air Force proved to be a transformative chapter, providing me with the opportunity to serve as a personnel specialist and human relations professional. Stationed in Turkey and Germany, I embraced the chance to broaden my horizons while simultaneously pursuing higher education through the Air Force’s tuition assistance program.

With a bachelor’s degree secured, I embarked on the second chapter of my journey, seamlessly transitioning from enlisted personnel to commissioned officer. As a space program manager, I delved into the intricacies of ground stations, launch vehicles, and satellites, gaining invaluable insights into the complexities of space exploration. My expertise led me to the Defense Acquisition University, where I honed my skills in acquisition management.

The pinnacle of this chapter was undoubtedly my tenure as a congressional liaison on Capitol Hill. Navigating the intricate corridors of power, I advocated for critical space programs and policies, gaining a deeper appreciation for the delicate balance between technological innovation and political realities.

The third chapter of my career unfolds at Space Foundation, where I serve as Chief Operating Officer. This non-profit organization, with its global reach, aligns perfectly with my passion for fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce within the space industry. Through Space Foundation’s initiatives, I am empowered to continue giving back and serving others, a core value instilled during my military service.

My unwavering commitment to space technology innovation, diversity, and inclusion has been the driving force behind my collaborations across the commercial, governmental, and educational sectors. I believe that by fostering a harmonious and progressive space landscape, we can unlock the boundless potential that lies beyond our planet.

Throughout my journey, I have learned invaluable lessons that continue to shape my approach to leadership and collaboration. Adaptability, resilience, and a deep sense of empathy have been instrumental in overcoming challenges and navigating the ever-evolving landscape of the space industry.

A Week to Remember: Unveiling Colorado Springs’ Hidden Gems

Picture this: the crisp mountain air fills your lungs, invigorating your senses as you gaze upon the majestic Rocky Mountains. Sunbeams dance upon the vibrant foliage, casting a warm glow over the enchanting landscapes of Colorado Springs. We embark on a week-long journey, exploring the city’s hidden gems, savoring its culinary delights, and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Day 1: A Taste of Luxury and Soaring Heights

Our adventure begins at The Broadmoor, a renowned luxury resort where elegance and grandeur intertwine. We indulge in a sumptuous breakfast, savoring the exquisite flavors and impeccable service that have made this dining destination a Colorado Springs institution.

With hearts and bellies full, we embark on a thrilling ascent to the summit of Pikes Peak, the highest mountain in the southern Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. As we ascend, the world below shrinks, revealing a breathtaking panorama of snow-capped peaks, verdant valleys, and shimmering lakes. We capture unforgettable photographs against the backdrop of this natural masterpiece, forever etching this moment in our memory.

Day 2: A Journey Through Time and Nature’s Wonders

We step back in time at the United States Air Force Academy, where the legacy of aviation and the spirit of service come alive. We explore interactive exhibits, witness the precision and dedication of the cadet corps, and gain a deeper appreciation for the Air Force’s pivotal role in American history.

We immerse ourselves in nature’s grandeur at Garden of the Gods, a mesmerizing park adorned with towering red rock formations sculpted by millennia of wind and water. We hike through the scenic trails, marvel at the intricate shapes and textures of these geological wonders, and capture awe-inspiring photographs against the backdrop of this celestial landscape.

Day 3: A Culinary Adventure and Wildlife Encounter

We delight our taste buds with a delightful lunch at the Garden of the Gods Club, a refined dining establishment nestled amidst the enchanting landscapes of the park. We savor the culinary artistry, impeccable service, and breathtaking views that make this restaurant a true gem of Colorado Springs.

We embrace the thrill of wildlife encounters at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, home to over 250 animal species from around the globe. We observe the fascinating behaviors of majestic lions, playful primates, and graceful giraffes, gaining a deeper appreciation for the diversity and beauty of the animal kingdom.

We escape to Red Rock Canyon Open Space, a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. We hike through the diverse landscapes, taking in the breathtaking views of the red rock canyons and the majestic Rocky Mountains beyond. As the sun begins its descent, we find a tranquil spot to witness the sky transform into a kaleidoscope of colors, marking the end of another unforgettable day.

Day 6: Artistic Inspiration and Culinary Diversity

We immerse ourselves in the creative energy of the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, a vibrant hub for art enthusiasts. We wander through diverse exhibitions, admire the works of talented artists, and gain a deeper appreciation for the power of art to inspire and evoke emotion.

We embark on a culinary adventure in downtown Colorado Springs, savoring the flavors of various cuisines at local restaurants and cafes. From authentic Mexican cuisine to innovative American fare, we indulge our taste buds in a symphony of flavors that will tantalize the senses.

Day 7: A Fond Farewell and Cherished Memories

We conclude our week-long adventure with a leisurely breakfast at a local cafe, savoring one last taste of Colorado Springs’ culinary delights. We share stories, laughter, and cherished moments from our journey, creating a tapestry of memories that will forever bind us to this remarkable city.

As someone who has dedicated my career to space innovation, entrepreneurship, and leadership, I am deeply grateful for all of the mentors and role models who have helped me along the way.
