We had the good fortune of connecting with Sherisse Hawkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sherisse, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
We had a creative idea and wanted to run with it. As one person said “you start a business when you feel it pulls you in almost against your will… basically there is the point when you can’t bear to NOT start it”
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I took a strange and circuitous route… from engineering student with good internships to being a Walt Disney Imagineer and rising up the corporate ladder to become a VP at Time Warner Cable.
It was not easy but at times, but it’s been a lot of fun
Key point – engineering is a creative career let’s treat it that way!
I failed calculus but still went on to get a masters in engineering.
Lessons – 1) Go where you are appreciated not tolerated. 2) Creative solutions require risks. 3) Anything is possible in the digital world.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Denver has so much to offer. Skiing in the mountains or a bike ride in the summer/spring. Eating at a smally family mexican place with great tamales
Visiting the natural history museum
Going to red rocks for an EDM concert
Doing a fun 5K run
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My two favorite business books are “First break all the rules” and “Never split the difference”
