We had the good fortune of connecting with Sierra Anderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sierra, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risks can be difficult, but they can also be rewarding. If you feel strongly about it and it brings you joy daydreaming about, then it’s 100% a risk that your intutition (or gut feeling) is telling you to take. I have taken so many risks throughout my career, from starting my business, to emailing potential clients just saying “Hi, I’d love to work with you!” and all the way back to what felt like starting my business all over again when I brought my husband, Brandan, into the business. When Brandan left his job to join me in documenting the moments, it literally felt as if the business was starting over. We had new procedures to implement, new ideas on how to best serve our clients and a whole new approach as we tackled each and every project together. Not to mention the thought of going down to one income and how/if that could harm us. I wouldn’t trade it for the world, we make a good team he and I, and we believe we will always be taking risks (some small, some big) because that’s just how life is and honestly, taking chances should excite those butterflies within – it means you care.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
We’re here to capture what and who you’re passionate about! We’re a bit unique in the fact that we specialize in more than one field. We photograph brands, interiors, lifestyle portraits and small + intimate weddings, and the part that excites us most about these differences is that one thing is constant, the love. The passion is present in all aspects and we witness it first hand, no matter what we’re photographing. Sometimes it’s a first home that the owners have poured their hard work and free time into. Other times it’s a business wanting to showcase their heart behind something they believe so very much in. And of course, there’s all the touchy feeling emotions of clinging to your spouse’s arm and reflecting on how far you’ve adventured together. We’re most proud of the connections we make with our client-friends. Life is simply too short for surface relationships. We believe it’s about making connections and finding some incredible humans to enjoy the ventures of life with. More than anything we want the world to know that there is passion behind you, your business, your home, your loved ones and not only are we there to capture it, but we are there to become part of it. We want to be the friends you call for a dinner + game night, while also being the friends you count on to document your life’s adventures!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh we are going to have fun with this question! To start we would set up a breakfast date at our favorite little spot, Lucile’s Creole Cafe, Fort Collins. Give us all the black coffee, beignets and spicy grits because we literally cannot get enough! Afterwards it’s off to Equinox for a pint you truly cannot find anywhere else. Hard to leave the happy vibe of Old Town, so we’ll stay awhile and walk around. Enjoying whatever grabs our attention before calling it an early night, because bright and early we’ve got another trip up our sleeves. There’s nothing like an early (I’m talking REALLY early) morning hike in Rocky Mountain National Park. Morning hikes before/as the sun is rising are peacefully calm, and offer so much beauty. We often see wildlife and soak in moments of being near all the elk and deer, birds, bunnies and chipmunks, and the occasional moose. After a moderate hike with like to top the trip off with brunch at Notch Top Cafe. Our favorite spot is on their cute little patio where we can feel the breeze and admire the gorgeous view, so that’s where we’re headed next! Full bellies and a long hike make for the most relaxing movie nights and our go-to film spots are The Lyric in Fort Collins, or The Kress in Greeley! Dinner + game nights are pretty darn special too. We host them at our home and we’re known for our chili – it’s different every time, but always just as delicious (especially with homemade cinnamon rolls!) Sequence is our go to board game, no-one has ever played and disliked it, it’s just good strategic fun! We love these dinner + game nights because it gives us a crowded free space to connect, laugh and grow together! Maybe it’s our old age, or the fact that we love introducing friends to friends but whatever it is, these game nights always end up being one of our very favorite moments together.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My biggest shoutout honestly has to go to my mom, Raelene – without her push I may not have ever started this business. She also pushed me to get Brandan into the business, she just kept saying we’d make a good team and no surprise here, she was right! My second shoutout has to go to my mother-in-law, Ina. She helped us gain the clientele we still have to this day, almost 6 years later. She rooted for me when I first started and has continue rooting for us ever since (now even more so that her boy has joined in!) Without that step in the door and word of mouth, I wouldn’t have gained the experiences that I’ve had these last 6 years. My third shoutout would go to our local community! We have so many wonderful humans to talk all things business with. These groups are like big virtual hugs. They are always there when you need them and provide a vital resource for just about anything! From questions, suggestions, constructive criticism, referrals, and then some! These groups are extremely supportive and the community over compettion concept is one we FULLY support. My fourth and final shoutout goes to ALL of our wonderful cheerleaders. Our families, friends and all of our wonderful clients over the years. Thank you so much for trusting us, believing in us, and befriending us. We feel very fortunate to know you all.
