We had the good fortune of connecting with Sojourner White and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sojourner, what’s the most important thing you’ve done for your children?
I’m not a parent haha BUT I think, from a child’s perspective, the most important thing they’ve done was encourage me to stay curious and understand that the world is out there to be seen and explored.
What should our readers know about your business?
Sojournies is a travel & career company that helps 9-5ers fulfill their career goals, bucket list dreams, and have more freedom & flexibility outside the office. What sets me a part being in the travel space is being someone who does not necessarily want to quit their job to travel the world. I also love staying in and working from hostels and often travel solo as I work remotely! And in the career & lifestyle space I don’t believe in limiting my career to an office or saving vacation days and PTO. But before becoming a traveling remote social worker & digital storyteller, I started Sojournies as a regular study abroad student. Traveling abroad, then later teaching and interning abroad, exposed me to a lifestyle of freedom & flexibility I did not know was truly accessible to a Black girl from Milwaukee. It’s been hard juggling a side passion with a full-time job and previously in grad school. But honestly it gave me an escape to uncover other things I love, including becoming a freelance travel writer. Overcoming impostor syndrome and insecurities is a daily battle. However, journaling over the years has helped to remind me of where I’ve been and where I want to be. No matter how daunting it can be to not pursue the “American Dream” the way society or our parents said it should be, there is so much possibility beyond our fears. I truly believe in a world where we do not compromise our comfort, livelihood, and flexibility for an office. So I built an energizing space where 9-5ers could check off their career goals and bucket list dreams to create their version of a life of adventure.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Since I’m born and raised in Milwaukee I’ll do that because it’s homeeee. And it’s Wisconsin so you got to come in the summer to experience festivals such as Summerfest (music festival) or Black Arts Fest, Mexican Fiesta, and so many more sprinkled throughout the summer. Planning a week around a festival would be my suggestion! But first things first I love to eat. Some of my favorite breakfast/brunch spots are Sweet Diner, Wonderland, Iron Horse Hotel, and Cafe Benelux. Lunch has to be at the Sherman Phoenix which houses some dope Black-owned businesses. Funky Fresh Spring Rolls is my choice often and getting dessert from Confectionately Yours. You can shop as you wait for your food. For dinner options, if you want soul food, we can go to Daddy’s. Or for Jamaican we’ll get Uppa Yard and drinks at Concoctionz. I’ll also have to take you to get some classic frozen custard from Kopp’s too. Attractions can be the Milwaukee Art Museum and Black Holocaust Museum for the artsy lovers. But my beer fans have a ton of taprooms and breweries like Lakefront Brewery, Indigo Brewing Company, and even distilleries like the Central Standard Crafthouse & Kitchen. We’ll have to through kayaking on the lake, a boat cruise, and possibly paddleboating. For hiking we’d go to Baraboo and hike at Devil’s Lake State Park (the most visited park in the state) which is under two hours away. I can go on and on. Milwaukee is home and I would love to show more people around.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The Black nuns from Heavenly Care Daycare! This was my first daycare as a kid who, as my mom says “raised me in a gym.” I’d like to think it was one of my first experiences where I learned the power of using my voice (even though my mom said I was yelling 😅).
