We had the good fortune of connecting with Sophie Adams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sophie, why did you pursue a creative career?
A career fueled by creativity was not a question, but rather a series of events that culminated in the embodiment of the lifestyle I learned is necessary to my joyful fulfillment.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My pieces reflect my own curiosity, to spark questions about the world we live in; scientifically, morally, and energetically. I best tap into my creative well when I submerge myself inside the living, breathing earth. I feed off the wonder of how the gas composition and temperature aligned just perfectly, down to the millionth, to form such a beautiful world in which I’m existing, interacting, observing, retaining, and critically receiving. As I peel back the layers of projected reality, I solder connections and discover mediums that become my vessel of expression at the precise right moment in time. I’ve tapped into my ability to write, embroider, paint, control electronics, work with fabric, improvisationally create music, and visualize in images. I have more to learn every day, and the prospect of infinite knowledge waiting for me in a tree, a bird, and the glittering balls of gas above us, thrills me. My purpose, my hope, is to serve as a bridge, to express my learnings through images, words, and sounds, subsequently providing a potential path to gratitude, beauty, and peace for those with whom my work speaks.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As a Buff alum, most of my favorite spots are in Boulder. My experiences there, both academically and professionally, make campus the first stop on my tour. I would begin in the third-floor north stairwell of the Roser Atlas Building to check out my second mural, “Golden Ratios”, which spans two stories and abstractly depicts the various aspect ratios used in cinema. We would then walk across campus towards the Fiske Planetarium. On the way, we would stop at Farrand Field for that trademark campus view of the Flatirons. The proximity of campus to breathtaking geological features is always remarkable to first-time and returning visitors alike. Once we depart the quad, our next stop would be the Solar System Model located right outside the front entrance of the planetarium. I would direct my friends to check out the large pyramid featuring my graphics set in bronze commemorating those who tragically lost their lives in spaceflight disasters. After they got a good look at those designs, we would then enter the Fiske Planetarium and be met with my first mural, “Elemental Structures”. This project, educational in nature, uses the building’s seven structural pillars to depict various elemental emission spectra. Then, entering the main lobby, we would be faced with my fourth and most recent installation, “As We Shall Return.” This piece features a 24-foot tall by 14-foot wide realist mural depicting a stylized yet scientifically accurate scene of an Apollo 17 astronaut walking across the surface of the Moon. The mural is accompanied by an inset 7-foot wide by 4-foot deep interactive sculpture, featuring animated lights and fiber optics that represent the base of a rocket ship. These works set the scene for the display of a genuine spacesuit from the Apollo 14 mission and an in-flight engineering jacket and hardhat generously lent to the planetarium by NASA. We’d then head inside the theater to watch the “Dead on the Dome” show that I curated a few years back, and melt into the visuals brought to life by one of Fiske’s talented navigators. At this point we would’ve worked up an appetite, so we’d head over to my favorite restaurant, Southern Sun, for some good eats, vibes, views, art, and beer. We’d close out the journey by heading over to VisionQuest, my favorite local small-batch brewery that supports local artists, jam bands, and kickass employees.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to express my gratitude for those who wholeheartedly and unconditionally support my creative endeavors, and pull me from the inevitable self-doubt spirals that accompany a creative lifestyle in a capitalist society.
