We had the good fortune of connecting with Sophie Graefenhain and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sophie, what role has risk played in your life or career?
When I think about taking risk, I think about how essential it is for growth. It should be done with thoughtful consideration and a clear understanding of potential outcomes, but it should also be done with courage. The most courageous risks are those taken with purpose, where we embrace uncertainty while being prepared to learn from both success and failure. Intelligent risk-taking involves balancing ambition with wisdom, ensuring that each step forward aligns with our values and long-term goals.
I have had to develop a thick skin in life, so without taking risks every step of the way, I would still be stuck in my own mind. Without taking risks, I would have never shared my art, thoughts, goals, and ideas with anyone. There is a vulnerability that comes with risk taking, and when you allow yourself to be vulnerable thats where the most growth can take place.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art merges raw, organic materials with contemporary forms, creating pieces that explore the intersection of nature, memory, and emotion. I’m drawn to textures and layers, allowing the work to unfold and reveal its depth over time.
I focus on blending diverse media and unconventional materials, which creates a tactile, immersive experience. My approach is deeply intuitive and process-driven, where the journey of creation is just as important as the final piece.
I’m particularly excited about starting a new series where I’m experimenting with personal expression more than I ever have—it’s challenging me to rethink what my art can be without the constraints of commissioned work, and I’m thrilled to see what the outcomes will be.
My path wasn’t easy. I had many obstacles that derailed what I had planned for myself, resulting in an atypical journey to be where I am today. I always kept going, and found my true voice after years of self-exploration and struggle. It was through constant persistence and learning from my failures that I found my unique direction in life and in my art.
I’ve learned that growth is not linear—it takes patience, vulnerability, and the willingness to fail. I’ve also realized that the most powerful art often comes from being truly authentic and embracing the unknown.
I want my art to inspire people to connect with their own emotions and memories, and to see the beauty in life’s imperfections. Pushing boundaries, and creating art that sparks deeper conversations is the ultimate goal.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband, John Fowler, has been a steady source of love, strength, humor, encouragement, and kindness since the day I met him. His unwavering encouragement and care has made all the difference in my day to day confidence and ability to stay strong when dealing with a lot of life’s difficulties.
My family deserves all of my gratitude as well. My parents have always been the steadiest form of motivation and so have my siblings. They have all been my inspiration to keep on going since the very beginning.
