We had the good fortune of connecting with Stefan Carbonaro and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Stefan, why did you pursue a creative career?
A passion for creating, I always was amazed by other artists or artisans being able to create something new with their hands. Being able to express myself through my paintings and transmitting emotions to the viewers. An artistic career can give the freedom of expression no other career can give you, letting you explore your feelings and transform them in works of art that can be enjoyed for a long time!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Established in Malta, I specialise in mixed media paintings on canvas, mostly large vibrant abstracts with powerful textures, creating unique combination artworks.
My work includes both acrylics and oils characterised by the juxtaposition of surfaces and lines, colours and non- colours as well as dynamics and statics.
I developed my skills by continuously experimenting with new techniques. Self-taught, I enjoy dissecting things within my work as I want people to stop and look a little bit harder. The viewer finds an entry point into the paintings as they expose a vague idea of objectivity. One feels reminded of something without being able to name it, offering a sort of bridge into the picture. Once this is experienced, one is surrounded by complete abstraction where personal consideration and interpretation reign.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Living in Malta, its guaranteed that we can have a blast for a whole week. Especially in the Summer period. I would definitely visit the beach on a daily basis, ideally early in the morning, when the beaches are still empty and the sea is crystal clear.
There are so many places to eat out, we are spoilt for choice! For breakfast, lunch and dinner. Historically Malta is filled with special places, that are thousands of years old! This would be a must see. The neolithic temples scattered around the islands. Beautiful old towns and villages just to lazy around if you are on holiday!
Artistically Malta has become a centre of artsy events with art exhibition on a weekly basis!
Night life is another chapter! It can get busy, noisy, fun and interesting! 😉
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shoutout to all the people around me mostly my partner Lou, my family and my close friends that in a way or other inspired me, helped me and gave me courage to continue moving on, getting out of my comfort zone. Behind every good artist there is a team of people that encourage, push and help.
