We had the good fortune of connecting with Stu and Ellyn Reynolds and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Stu and Ellyn, what do you attribute your success to?
Stu and I have found that ultimately it is our customer service that has helped us grow in the market. We really enjoy people and that is reflected in how we interact with our customers. They appreciate knowing they are important to us and feel confident that we will take care of them if any issues arise. Our product is well-designed and backed by a great product warranty from the owners of Trimlight, so that gives reassurance as well. Our company has grown steadily over the past 6 years and most of it is due to hard work and consistency. Our lives revolve around the business, a little too much perhaps. We answer the phone night or day and often work into the night.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We are proud to have started Rocky Mountain Trimlight from the ground up. After a hailstorm in our area that damaged our home, we decided to upgrade and were looking for something that would have permanent lighting on it to make it easier to decorate for the holidays. We didn’t even know if a product existed, but decided to look. After some searching, we found Trimlight! Unfortunately, they were based out of Utah and we learned that the product is distributed only through dealers. After several months of research and discussions, we decided that we would become dealers for southern Colorado, thinking it would just be a small side business that we could do together on weekends, never realizing that it would grow so rapidly. We have met many wonderful people over the years and have installed nearly 600 homes to date, using subcontracted installers that we train to meet our quality standards. The challenges have included adapting to the changing economy and finding and keeping loyal workers. The inflation this year really affected sales and we have had to pay more to our installers and charge less to customers, but we are staying afloat. There’s certainly advantages to having your own business as we have seen, but it also takes a big commitment. We work many hours and have to make sacrifices along the way. Our joy comes from lighting up people’s homes and seeing the excitement when their house shines bright at the end of the installation. Many of our customers use their lights year-round, and others are more conservative and use them only on holidays, but either way, they are enjoying the convenience and beauty that Trimlight brings.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When we have friends visit our area or Pueblo West, we like to go to the River Walk and enjoy Angelo’s Pizza, especially in the summer when you can sit on the patio and enjoy the lights and the nice ambiance. The Pueblo Reservoir offers nice hiking and scenic photos, especially when viewed from Liberty Point at sunset. One of our favorite places to suggest to visitors is the Center for American Values, tucked away along the River Walk. It features all of the Medal of Honor recipients in large photos with their story and quote. For those that appreciate America and the sacrifices our veterans have made, it is truly inspirational.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Becoming an entrepreneur always takes a leap of faith, and both Stu and I have grown up with a strong Christian foundation built on faith. I would say that we fully believe that quite often God directs our steps. Having worked in the corporate world, we both began to have the desire to have our own business where we could have more of a purpose and control over our futures. We took that leap of faith, leaving our other jobs, and are sure glad we did.
