We had the good fortune of connecting with Suzan Lotus Obermeyer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Suzan Lotus, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
A daily deposit in the health bank is a concept I have adopted from a close friend. The idea is to be aware that the body & mind & nervous system thrive with daily care. In the early 2000’s I trained very hard to make the US Equestrian Team and competed in the Pan American Games in the 100 mile endurance competition. The discipline gained in this pursuit continues to inform and be a resource moment by moment in all aspects of my life.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My poetry is in the form of paintings. The common element in every painting is a specific state of being; a glimpse into mystery, night, nature and the nature of things. My essence is my unique voice. My most proud and surprised moment was winning a first prize at the V Bienal Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo de Argentina, Buenos Aires. Argentina in 2022. What I’m most pleased and excited about is that my pieces bring joy to my collectors.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Day 1: The Pine Creek Cook House 12.5 miles up Castle Creek Road is an iconic dining experience nestled against the Elk Mountains, best proceeded in Winter by a cross country ski or sleigh ride or in summer a road bike or beautiful hike.
Day 2: If summer Mtn bike, Red Hill, in winter hike or snow shoe followed by Tiny Pine Bistro in Carbondale
Day 3: Breakfast at Rosi’s Little Bavaria restaurant followed by a slow soak in either Hot Springs in Glenwood Springs.
Day 4: Gondola ride up Aspen Mountain to grab views and ski or hike. Stop for a rest and breakfast at Bonnies, famous for oatmeal pancakes. Diner at French Alpine Bistro, great atmosphere!
Day 5: If Summer head up Independence pass for a hike or bike, if Winter hit Snowmass Mtn then dinner at II Poggio.
Day 6: Summer hike Huntsman ridge, then Marble’s Slow Groovin, but for winter Highlands, Escobar for drinks.
Day 7: Sant Ambroeus for a great brunch before heading to Aspen Airport

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Reflecting on your question, gratitude for many people and opportunities come to mind. For several years I happened to live near Craig O’Brien’s old print making studio and over time learned a great deal. Spending deep studio time at Anderson Ranch has been incredibly supportive for development of more than one body of work. All staff, professors and cohort of fellow students at Transart Institute fostered an amazing think tank in conceptual art theory which has expanded my mind. Steven Young of Nederland, Co remains a very influential teacher in my personal development; starting with 20 plus years of trainings, workshops and classes focused on Virginia Satir’s Human Validation Models. Lastly my family and close friends that have endlessly believed in my spirit and light I give heart felt thank you’s.
