We had the good fortune of connecting with Suzanne Sharkey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Suzanne, why did you pursue a creative career?
Truth is, I started to explore cooking more in January 2019 after the still birth of our son, Aidan. It was a terribly dark time, I was using cooking as a sort of therapy to be able to create and bring things into this world that brought happiness. And let’s be honest, food makes everyone happy! As time went on I started to branch into desserts and then in late 2021 I made the leap into making layered cakes. This culinary journey truly saved my life and has brought so much inner peace and joy into my life. It pushed me to look inward in search of myself & who I wanted to become. To my surprise I found an artist who now loves to paint on canvas and on cakes. It has brought true inner happiness. Enough so that I want to share this joy with as many people as I can.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My creations come from the heart, whether they are on canvas or on cakes; I put my everything into each one. It definitely has not been easy to get myself to this point however, I wouldn’t change this journey because it has been such a turning point in my life. Two of my favorite hastags that I use is #onlythebestforyou and #cakesfilledwithlove. They aren’t popular ones that will get me noticed but it is just to let people know that I will always only give you the best because that is what you deserve in this life. Some one that will stop at nothing until it is perfect because you’re worth it. During each creation I always learn at least one thing – big or small – those learning moments are what push me to get better and make me strive to grow.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh my goodness, we are gonna have a blast – let’s go! We are going to go camping but before we jet out into nature we need to spend a day walking through & appreciating Meow Wolf and then drinks at Green Russell a speakeasy downtown! Once we’re done with all that the best way to enjoy our weekend is by sitting around a campfire!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My Shoutout is dedicated to my beautiful neice, Savannah and my wonderful husband Tom.

As we began to plan Christmas dinner (2021) with our family Savannah begged her mom to assign me for making dessert. In that moment, I knew a pastry dessert wasn’t going to cut it and I needed to do something big! I didn’t want to let her down; with that drive and my determination I started to research and design a layered cake for Christmas. Without her persistence on the matter, her love & her support I would have never found my love for cake decorating. Savannah, you may be only 14 but you have such a big impact on the people in your life and those you meet. I love you.

I also couldn’t do this if I didn’t have the support from my wonderful husband. He is my biggest supporter and cheerleader. No matter if I’m up until 1 am decorating or busy all weekend I know that he has my back and will be just as excited about each creation as I am!
