We had the good fortune of connecting with Svitlana Prouty and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Svitlana, how do you think about risk?
To chose to be a professional artist in its self is a risk. While at the time I did not fully understand this risk, I knew that my art was what brought me happiness. The biggest attraction to me was the freedom to make my own path and schedule. At the time I was making my choice to become a professional artist I lived in Ukraine where the social pressures to earn money in excess was not a factor like it is many countries. What I did see was many people going making the motions to go to work every day but not really being happy in what they did or accomplished. I knew I did not want that life.

Now, twenty five years later, having forged my own path as an artist I realize the risks I took better. Over the years I witnessed many artists struggling to make ends meet or putting aside their art to work other jobs. Watching this made me only work harder to make my dream to create art and have my freedom come true. I took the risks and was able to make it work and will forever be happy that I went this path.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a multi-media artists. I work with acrylic on canvas, watercolor and silk painting. What makes me stand apart is my works is whimsical, cheerful and spiritual all rolled into one. Often I paint from own spiritual reference based on my experiences. I also bring in my own heritage using techniques used in Ukrainian folk art for decades..

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Historical downtown Helena with old Victorian houses, churches, incredible Cathedral, Last Chance Gulch street with small shops, restaurants.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mom was very supportive and encouraging to follow my dreams. She recognized my talent at an early age and so she concisely made the decision to nurture my talent.
