Meet Sybil Hill Carter | Artist/ Co-owner Gallery 101

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sybil Hill Carter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sybil, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
It’s July5 20203 and I’m celebrating 58 years on this planet earth! Hah… I grew up with parents that were and are Artist, creative thoughts, music playing filled the home. I grew up in Dallas, TX. My dad would be out in the garage painting and I would curiously join him, those years lead to a natural understanding of who I am today as an artist. Tenacity-hard work and commitment. My father was self-taught and he’d be mixing house paints with house putty, anything he use that would stick to his wooden canvas. When I started painting in 2003 my daughter was 2 years old and the idea of working full time away from her and honesty nature…. as living in the majestic beauty of Colorado was important. I prayed “what kind of god would you be if I cannot spend time with my greatest love… daughter and nature?” I started to sell right away 1-3 paintings monthly my first year and 2023 haven’t changed the manifestation of thoughts: ” I am an artist and a Mother although my daughter is now 21 and on her own journey an artist. I was also a single mom by 2006 and struggled financially yet always believed a sale would come and luckily I got asked 2008 to be a part of the Farmers Market in Aspen, my goal… 30,000 I did 27,335 yes I keep the weekly list of sales as a reminder of goals/dreams.. And then with this earning bought my first home as a single mom artist! 😇🥳 For me the stability of a home life was just as important if not more as an artist.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Contemporary Artist and American Painter Sybil Hill Carter has successfully sold her paintings for the past 20 + years, her art finding its way into the homes of many collectors and numerous galleries. She creates each painting in a manner that emits a unique style of movement + color in an elegant composition…
Even though Sybil creates most of her pieces at her home studio in Carbondale, Gallery 101 was opened in Basalt in 2021 as a way to display her art in a “gallery” setting for clients to enjoy.
She and her sister/co-owner Ingrid Magidson who is also an accomplished artist each adorn the walls with their creations.
Gallery 101 is owned and operated by the twin sisters who enjoy spending “Summer Sundays” at the
Gallery from 11:00 – 4:00 with Clients + Collectors + Designers.
Throughout the remainder of the year Gallery 101 is open by appointment only.
With the calming sounds of the Frying Pan River drifting into the space, Gallery 101’s peaceful and beautiful setting is the perfect atmosphere for their artwork.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My backyard, the gardens Ive cultivated for years and the ideas that come thru for my artwork. Then perhaps head to Phat Thai in Carbondale, for delicious drinks and food. Walking my dogs along the rio grande or taking a bike ride.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Sybil’s journey as an artist began early in life. As a child Sybil was drawn by art and spent a great deal of time visiting the many galleries and museums in the Dallas/Fort Worth area with her family.
Fortunate to have parents gifted with artistic abilities, she thrived in a home that placed great value and respect on all artistic endeavors. Her father was an accomplished abstract painter who exhibited his work in the Dallas Museum of Art and was highly acclaimed for his self-taught style, a style that enabled Sybil to watch, learn, and grow as an artist.
