Meet Talus Schreiber

We had the good fortune of connecting with Talus Schreiber and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Talus, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Work life balance isn’t this simple thing, I have found it to be such a dynamic conversation. Currently I am a part of a multitude of projects, all of which can stretch me thin; they also help me develop my character at the core. As a student, professional, athlete, and business owner, it’s not simple. You have 24 hours in a day, 6-8 of those you are asleep. So to continue and to succeed, I need to perform at a high level, complete tasks, and knock things off. However, the truth is that we are all human, forget, procrastinate, and most of all make mistakes. The thing that I can do is continuously try my best and perform. My schedule isn’t a simple 9-5, it’s a complex time frame, starting mornings some days at 4:30 am, and other days not ending till 3 am. This schedule has taught me to stay on my toes and track what is happening. It has also taught me to take every moment as an opportunity. Sometimes I experience heavy levels of burnout and we all need a break. Whether calling my mom on my commute to check in, or planning weeks in advance for a coffee with a friend to catch up, these little moments in such a busy environment help. It’s also about having a good lifestyle; being able to run and ski helps release my mind into calmness. It’s also taking the time to enjoy my life, go on that trip, and grab drinks with friends; I was young once. I don’t want to look back and say I worked 24/7, but I want to look back and say I enjoyed my time and moments, but worked to be at the level I am.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Age is a number that guides many aspects of life. At 25, you are old enough to rent a car, at 21, you are old enough to drink a beer, at 18, you are old enough to vote, and so on. This demographic creates agism, which has run rampant in my life. The number of days since my birth has depicted my level of intelligence and wisdom in the eyes of many. Sure, I have never aced a math test, or been a perfect 4.0 student. However, I did start working at 13, and started freelancing at 16. As a society, we have this preconceived notion that the older you are, the smarter you are, which is true in a large amount of aspects. Though we are all young at heart, we are all still learning. There is no age when you stop, and if you stop, you give up. At 16, when everyone said I shouldn’t start a company because of my age, I did it. There has been a level of discrimination shrouded in jealousy. At the end of the day, we are all trying to succeed, I am just eager to learn more and push the boundaries of what is possible. Pushing past this barrier of age, to set goals, but also be a sponge and continuously learn.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In an age where we are controlled by instant gratification and the need always to be connected, when people visit, I want to ensure that those distractions aren’t happening. Boulder is a beautiful place, with culture and art unique to the town, and beautiful views and locations all around. You can also leave the city and be in a different environment so fast. For me, taking my friends to some of the amazing restaurants in town like Stella’s, or going on a hike on the Shanahan Ridge trail. These simple places I feel allow me to immerse myself into an environment and connect with the people who may be visiting.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Community is at the core of my success. Developing with the people around you, and having a group that can also mentor and guide you is huge. Being at CU Boulder, I have found an epicenter for that. From the professors I have who help push me to succeed, while helping guide me. I have found fellow students that have a similar desire to create, grow, and conquer the world. The community also stems so far outside of this, to friends and family, people like my sister who is a crutch and mentor in so many aspects of my life. Humans are pack animals, we want to stick together. You can also only do so much on your own, and having a network or community helps lead to a level of success.
